I know I'm banging on again but how and who will define what's acceptable or not? I think we can all agree that bikinis in the mall aren't acceptable but what else? And what is acceptable? How much cleavage, obviously not down to the belly button but an inch or two? A blanket ruling on what you can and can't wear is going to be open to individual interpretation both by the wearers (if thats a word) and the enforcers. Pandoras box or can of worms opening time.

Today's take on the story...

http://www.thenational.ae/news/uae-n...-struggle#full

From the article:

Dalal Abdullah, a housewife shopping at Khalidiyah Mall in Abu Dhabi, said: "If you go to Harrods in London, there is a law against photography, shorts and sleeveless shirts, and everyone respects it."

Naeema Al Mazrouei, 40, a mother of five, said it was simply a question of good manners for visitors to show awareness of a country's culture and traditions.

"Our women's decency in appearance is one of the pillars of our society," she said. "All nationalities are welcomed but respect our general traditions. I think we have reached a point where what is seen in the streets or malls near beaches means a law is needed and should be enforced in our beloved country."

No threat to tourism here http://www.thenational.ae/news/uae-n...eat-to-tourism

Dr Al Sayegh suggested offenders should receive a fine or deportation if the violation is repeated.

The matter is now with the Cabinet.

Re: Lack of Clothes - again

no effect on tourism. yeah right

"Hamad Al Rahoumi, an FNC member from Dubai, said he believed many people disobeyed dress-code policies deliberately.

Mr Al Rahoumi said the sight of short shorts, tube tops and bikinis under transparent dresses had become all too common.

"I believe more than half [of dress-code offenders] are residents and do it on purpose," he said.

"They are mostly youth. They do abnormal things to attract attention. Your freedom stops when it steps over others."

oh dear, here we go.

a knee jerk reaction to and from a disenfranchised youth who have taken to twitter to blame foreigners for all their cultural ills. Whilst being blissfully unaware of the truth.
Given the fear over the arab spring I now fear the fnc will pass a law to appease whilst everyone ignores the real issues. The issue will not end with this, now they have a taste of power there will be another issue soon.
Next will be another and more determined call to remove expats and the detrimental effect of western decadence.

Expats have no power in informing or educating either residents or tourists regarding dress code.
Who owns and manages the airlines who bring people here, where are the leaflets in immigration, the planes, hotels and malls?
Who owns the mcdonalds, cinemas, shops etc etc

Its very easy to blame all your ills on westerners and the cultural norms of other countries while you gleefully toss out your own......

The personal beliefs of some people is that people whould be covered from shoulders to ankles, so even if a rule is imposed for "shoulder to knees", an "enforcer" may selectivley enforce the rule based on personal beliefs which is shoulder to ankles.....

Is it really possible for any country to hand out passports based on anonymous comments in newspapers ?

A lot of the comments are not anonymous. Some are quoted in the papers and are named on their Twitter accounts.

Someone gets what I'm talking about:
"Second, if a law were passed, what would it look like? And how would it be implemented? In Dubai, authorities have advised women to cover their knees and shoulders. If a woman wears baggy shorts and a T-shirt, she may be technically in violation, but a woman wearing a tightfitting shirt and jeans, which might reveal more than it covers, is in complete compliance. Would it be safe to say that it is not really what you wear, but how you wear it?

The worrying thing is that enforcing a dress law would be at the discretion of the individual passing judgement. Even if there were a law, there would still be complaints. You can only please so many people, and it would be interesting to see how much work went into differentiating what is appropriate and what is not."

Re: Lack of Clothes - again

It seems that a lot of Emiratis think that a law is not helpful. They just want a little common sense and for people to think about what they wear. Seeing quite a number on Twitter speaking against a law.

Anyone who wants heavy handed legislation for everything is missing the point of legislation. A country runs better on consensus than it does on coercion.

To paraphrase a few of the tweets: I'd rather see UAE Dress code featuring wearing a seat belt.

and whilst they are making laws, how about enforcing the 1 that says locals are not allowed in bars wearing a dishdash, or the 1 about Emiratis not allowed to drink alcohol or even the 1 about extramaritail activities. I think somebody forgot to remind the guy in a dishdash in a bar snogging the face off a Chinese prositute about any of these! :frown:

But that's OK cos he was drunk and went to pray the following morning.

At Ajman Beach Hotel, the bar opened just after morning prayers (5am or so), by 10 am the locals couldn't walk but where still getting helped into their land cruisers by management, once police turned up while it was happening for an unrelated reason, and just ignored it.

Hypocritical or what?
