Dress codes are wonderful things for schools, institutions and private companies...but no damned government anywhere has any business telling people what to wear. That's the job of culture and society. N. So even the Scots were thinking about this too. So they too have no right to say what's revealing or not then, but they use subtle words such as revise, review and clarification to me. Isn't that what the government discussion here in the UAE is all about too? Don't even get the Mathematist started on what girls wear in UK schools and the comments the boys say about them...Do you ever hear mum shout at her son, "you ain't going out dressed like that!" Why do you think that is so fellow Brits, why? http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotlan...tland-13940286 and what about the Italians too here http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-11617091 so it's simply sheer ignorance to say anything to discuss revealing and wholly inappropriate clothing like this is an ultra-conservative and backward response that belongs in the Middle Ages... |

Ha ha ha, I'm sure if you go, they'll offer one for free...
Talking about them, Yvonne Ridley may be a better person to ask! She don't wear an abaya but is modestly dressed last I remember... This is not about burkas or abayas. It's about not wearing very revealing clothes on par with what prozzies wear and night-club attire in a public area such as a park and of course, malls. Wear what you want, but not in public is the message. Clearly, people are having problems understanding this. You see, I just can not bring myself to spend money on hideous things. she says. Exactly what most of the non-white expats think why spend so much money on something hideous that doesn't cover anything... Never the less, since you seem to understand how the Taliban think, I am glad of your reassurance of them handing a Burqa out to me, happily.:D Furthermore, in all the years I have been in Qatar, I have never seen anybody wearing night club attire in a park or mall. But then again, the definition of night club attire may be a little alien to those who have never been in one... |
Re: Lack of Clothes - again
As insulting as my post is? You are a hypocrite as you insulted the women here and everywhere else by clearly stating that what they wear, the abaya, is hideous. THAT my dear is insulting.

Re: Lack of Clothes - again
From what I've seen in malls, the vast majority of offenders are Eastern European. Hotpants, mini-skirts, skimpy tops - they have absolutely no respect.
A few years ago (and even now to some extent) the Brits get the bad publicity here. To me, the Eastern Europeans are the ones who need their necks reeling in. Not just in terms of clothing, but they are (in general) very rude - for example more and more are moving onto The Shoreline, saying thank you to someone for holding the lift or opening a door is an alien concept to them. I may have digressed into a bit of a rant, but if a poll were taken at MoE I'm certain the vast majority of those half dressed would be Eastern European. Or Lebanese. And the Russians are way to arrogant to take any notice of a leaflet telling them to dress proper. |

Oh come on... of course you KNOW what inappropriate clothing is. If you don't, then what can I say, oh dear, you really must be a deluded individual living in cuckoo land mate...

Your definition of inappropriate is different to mine so you need to define what you believe inappropriate is.

Problem is that there is no memo.
Not at the airport nor in the hotels. Sell cheap package holidays and this is what you get, don't like it either brief the hotels to provide info or shut up. Yes I know people should be aware but let's be honest 99% of those doing it are not exactly rocket scientists if they feel going out in a bikini to the mall is acceptable anyway ...fortunately we don't have that kind of nonsense here in the malls in Thailand... |

Re: Lack of Clothes - again
most of the press I've read seems to blame the expats with virtually no mention of tourists. Funny that eh

Re: Lack of Clothes - again
OK, my opinion of modest attire for living in the ME is not showing much skin and loose clothes. It really is that simple and this is what's causing the offence to locals and others when they ask me about this.
According to the last few posts, people clearly know what the problem is whereas you seem to be confused. This is the problem. Nobody is asking people to wear abayas or kindoras, nobody. Just think about what you wear and the offence it does cause. Hope that answers your question. |
Re: Lack of Clothes - again
I always wear clothes in the mall.

I take great offense when someone barges past me when im pushing my son in his buggy and causes a door to slam into him, i take extreme offense when some kid who is barely house trained is running around a mall and slaps my son as he runs past. I am beyond incensed when i am driving and overtaking someone when the **** nugget behind me in a patrol is riding my bumper as he wants to overtake that exact second. while we have a great national debate about causing offense and respecting others i'd like to see these issues addressed as well |
