Re: Exodus: Brits Leaving Dubai
Just in time for the Xmas decorations at the MK shopping centre. When it was opened, it was the largest in Europe and I recall Cliff Richard making a pop video there. Are the concrete cows still standing?

The last I remember, they were there. I think they were on loan.

Well well well ... at least some of you are waking up.
I did say some months back to leave asap and get a job before recession bites.
To recap I had an offer of $400000 in AD all up mid year but after seeing the place (the pits IMO), and discovering that a woeful sand blasted unit/terrace in the desert would cost about $150k pa I couldnt leave fast enough.
Ive worked every day since and this week I started a new gig in syd on $440k. I moved to a lovely renovated federation cottage 2 mins from train for $30k per annum. Half of that is tax deductible as are many other expenses. My savings are earning 7.5% per annum and any $$$ i might be behind get me value like roads, transport, town planning, welfare, a justice system, and other 1st world basics.
Or just keep on suffering as a second class citizen a best and slave to the arabs at worst.
The choice is yours.

If you did, you'd put your salary at half a million per year...

You're not the only one. I have had several (well paid and comfortable) clients and friends of mine head back or say they are only staying till the rent contract runs out.
If you are better off (or even just the same) in your home country why would you stay in a country where you can be arrested for kissing your better half in public?
Weather is a rubbish excuse...even in the current economic climate most people back home still go on holiday once or twice a year. Besides, I don't define a good climate as being near 50C for half the year...!
This is no surprise to me. I am comfortable here but I can't see myself being here in 3-4 years unless I get an astronomical income increase...money isn't everything. Once I am comfortable I want culture, freedom and a place where my children won't grow up thinking it's normal to just hang around a mall spending the 500dhs per week pocket money I give them.

Let me correct it for you:-
Dubai has no soul and no character - a bit like the 'town' in a Bob The Builder episode.

On other threads I have repeatedly expressed my view that Dubai PLC is about to come tumbling down - it's already technically bankrupt for one thing, and if/when house prices fall, watch out...........
(PS - don't take my MK thing too seriously - I'm a Bedfordshire boy, and taking the p--- out of anything to do with Bucks is a popular pastime...........)

Never said Dubai had soul and character - I simply said MK hasn't either of those things...........

Cobblers...in Bob the Builder, everyone is happy and friendly to their neighbours. In Dubai, your neighbours phone the Municipality if they see too many cars parked outside.
