They have been doing it for about 10,000 years before we all showed up. I'd call that pretty sustainable.
A town of over 1000 natives collectively spending all year waiting for goose season and then spending a solid two weeks obliterating anything that moves with shotguns is not. The former is what it used to be like - the latter is what it's like now and I've seen it myself a few times. Not all that nice to be honest... |

A few semi-nomadic families hunting stuff with spears and arrows is sustainable.

When I came to Canada I was in the "how can you hunt you barbaric soab" club. Meeting and mingling with folk who do it it becomes the norm, it's a passtime - and something for the "guys" (read guys and girls) to do and enjoy and have beers after. Some trophy hunting is OK as long as it's sustainable. |

I was like that too. I'll happily admit that shooting stuff is really fun though - I tend to stick to tin cans and rural roadsigns but I guess I can see the appeal of shooting live targets. Although I wouldn't want to kill anything unless it was for meat or if it was going to kill me (genuine issue with my job, check me out :P )

I would imagine that the objectors to hunting would have objected to the killing and butchery that took place at venues such as "Head Smashed In" in bygone times. What about the warriors in those days that collected claws, skins of animal they had killed as a demonstration of their bravery? Some people get wasted, some people hunt, some people smoke, some people take drugs, some people participate in extreme sports, some people paint. We can all find objectionable reasons to criticize the choices of others. Each to their own, I say:D |

Each to their own, I say:D I dunno, that photo of the family, particularly the little girl standing with a slain giraffe was pretty grisly. When one thinks of "holiday" does one really think of that? It's horrible.:( I remember seeing a photo of the Queen with a slain tiger in India, she looks awkward as heck, I don't think she enjoyed it... who would? I understand men feeling all macho over the "hunt" but do women really enjoy that kind of thing? weird... |

They can, and will, make their choices as they get older although, again from personal experience, kids in with families here that hunt, if they do not want to go - are not forced. I think moreso for the fact that an, irritable, bored, nonplussed offspring would not be condusive to a succesful hunt. |

It's each to their own as AC says. If the kids have been brought up with hunting it's no different to them being brought up to believe in catholicism / Hindu etc.

Well the point is a bit moot seing as the family would be hunters at home (wherever home is) and I would say with 100% certainty that no-one would spend that much money on a hunting trip without everyone being behind it - ie wife kids etc.
