Re: The Toon Army / EPL thread

From today's bulletin at nufc.com...

May we suggest that anyone with strong views and opinions takes themselves to SJP on Saturday and vents those - they'll find plenty of others doing that and plenty of lenses and microphones to capture the goings-on.

Specific demonstrations are being planned for Saturday and we'll bring you news of those as that day draws nearer.

Supporting the team remains at the heart of this for us and most of you - that's why we aren't advocating a boycott of games.

However we fully support calls for the boycotting of club merchandise sales and SJP food and drink outlets including Shearer's Bar.

On a wider scale, we also support calls to boycott other businesses owned by Mike Ashley, including Sports Direct and Lillywhites, plus numerous other companies and brands under the Sports Direct banner listed here.

And to those who have already walked away in disgust from the club over the whole affair, we understand and sympathise with your views.

Ouch.

Wow, Im shocked....

There is a "Shearers Bar", and people normally want to drink there? Hopefully its more interesting than the heroic namesake.

God love NUFC. If it werent for them liverpool would be the worst run club in the premiership (maybe... there is a lot of competition for that title I suppose)

Mike Ashley is likely going to offload the club to anyone who'll will take it and give him a near-sensible price for it... and until then no sane manager is going to go near the place.

So, sometime in the near future, new owners come in, and look for a new manager... surely not The Third Coming of KK??

I haven't been but I picture a shrine to Mr. Interesting with giant posters of him raising his arm in that celebration of his and dull safe pop/rock music playing with the blandest of drinks and food menu.

In my post above, I said that "no sane manager" is going to be interested in the NU job as things stands at present.

Yesterday BBC Radio Scotland's Sportsound programme were tipping Gordon Strachan as a contender...:rofl:

Spooky. I have been and that's exactly what it is like.

Attractive as that idea may be (;)), Novo, I'd be concerned that if 50,000 Geordies can turn on a big, fat, team-shirt-wearing, beer-guzzling Geordie millionaire-benefactor, then I don't think I'd last very long.

Unless I brought in Jimmy Nail as manager, with Jimmy Five-Bellies as Director of Football, and put Paul Gascoigne in charge of Shearer's Bar.

No, no, no. The idea is that we get all of those 50,000 Geordies to be co-owners too. I reckon 200 mil pounds should do the trick nicely, that's only about C$ 8000 each. Just about what hockey idiots in Toronto paid for their seat licences at the AC centre. No sweat. Let's do it.

An Indian consortium is looking to take over Newcastle...

Re: The Toon Army / EPL thread

Seriously Novo, do NUFC have a Supporter's Trust?

My team, Dundee United, have a Supporter's Trust called ArabTrust (Dundee United fans are called Arabs). The Trust has a seat on the Board, and now owns about 10% of the Club shares, and it also has first option on any available shares. It's funded by memberships, fundraising and donations.

Baiscally, your suggestion is an extended version of that scheme. I honestly do think that if any club in the UK could do it, it would be Newcastle. That's because your fans are really obsessed with the club and with its perceived sense of community.

Trouble is, how do you persuade 50,000 Geordies to cough up 4 grand each, and then buy a season ticket on top of that?

I honestly don't know of such a Trust in the Toon. I'm sure that if one exists, it's not on the Board though. Various supporters groups have suggested a fan buy out in the last week or so, but I don't know if there's any momentum to the idea.

As to how to persuade them... behave like Ashley has. You clearly have a pretty good feeling for what makes the Toon Army tick though. It's so much more than just a fan base. The Geordie Nation has a much clearer and prouder sense of unique identity than, say, Canada has. :D
