The ownership nonsense at Liverpool at the time was certainly an influence. I suspect it wasnt really a case of "not good enough", but hindsight is 20;20 and going back is always a mistake. Who would you have instead, and why? As I said, hes worth considering on the short list, but one wonders whether he and Levy would work well together, Levi probably wants someone more flexible, isnt that ultimately why Harry got the chop after all. |

New manager is almost an annual event for us Jacks.
Flynn was the manager who masterminded our escape from relegation from the League in 2003. Jackett took us up to League One 2 years later in 2005. Martinez, in his first full season had us running away with the League One title in 2008. Sousa steadied the ship for a season in 2010 and finally Rodgers took us into the Premiership in 2011. Now 2012 we have Michael Laudrup, who's have thought that in 2003 eh. Be interesting to see how Rodgers does at Liverpool, for some reason the paper appear to credit him to way we play, when in fact Martinez was the one who did that. Martinez joined us in 2003, one of the players brought in by Flynn during the great escape. He was made captain and was adored by the fans. His time came to an end with us during our second year in League One, he was constantly at loggerheads with Jackett about the style to play. Martinez wanted to play a passing game but Jackett favoured the good old 'lump it' to a centre forward. Stories were around how Martinez was instilling his philosophy to the players during training and which countered Jacketts orders. In the end Jackett got rid of Martinez to Chester who were still in League Two then. The following season we were in the top half but floundering, dropped to 10th/11th and Jackett was being critisised from all quarters, I think just after the window closed eraly Feb he jumped ship. Huw immediately went to Martinez, it appears that Huw agreed with Martinez all along. The players had all respected Martinez when he was there and his earlier clandestine training helped him to fast track the passing style, he turned us around and we went into the last game of the season 3 points behind Blackpool who were in the last play-off spot and something like a 7 goal deficit for GD, the last game was Blackpool at home. It was the most entertaining 3-6 defeat, we just went all out attack, so Blackpool went into the play-offs and won promotion. The following year, we played the passing style all season, the 'experts' were all saying it wouldn't work in League One, but we run away with the League, 10 points clear of Forest and 16 clear of Leeds who had 15 points deducted that year. The following year we finished 8th and Martinez left us for Wigan, hated by the Jack fans due to comments he made, such as they will have to drag me out of this club. Martinez instilled the passing style, the main problems with Martinez was stubbornness (not too bad in a manager) and the fact that he could not organise a defence, we had a lot of exciting Keeganess games. Sousa was dour, he strengthened our defence at the detriment of the attack, a lot of 0-0's ensued. Everyone was so glad when Leicester came in and poached him at the end of the year. But Sousa did instill the passing at the back and retain the ball more style. Rodgers came in and made a mix of the both before, a couple of Chelsea signings (Sinclair and Borini helped). It will be interesting to see how Rodgers gets on at Liverpool and the ego's he will have to overcome. he was sacked within 6 months at his previous gig (reading), simply because the players could not adopt to the style he wanted to play. When he came to Swansea he walked into a team that already played that way and he just needed to tweak it. Will he get the time and will the players support his ideas as that will be crtitcal. One thing he is, is a very good man manager. |

He needs to go mend his reputation somewhere else. I've heard Martinez is top of the list. I have nothing against Moyes but we would not be "Doing it in style" if he takes over. |
