Over to you.

I was just doing a number 2 and during the process I gave this conundrum some thought.

In theory the best way to do it would be to go to a book makers and get the odds for each team finishing in that specific place. One would then have to multiply them together.

It would be close to infinitive.

That's as good as a go as I'll have.

Good to know Ashley Cole is good for something.

Cole helps Torres

Re: The Toon Army / EPL thread

The mathematical probability of it happening (ignoring form and everything else that differentiates the teams) is 1 in 2,432,902,008,176,640,000.

That is: 2 quintillion,432 quadrillion,902 trillion,8 billion,176 million and 640 thousand to 1.

As for the maximum odds from a bookmaker, if I recall correctly, any winnings of this nature are capped. So, even if you name all 20 teams in the correct order, and begin to multiply the odds [the bookmaker gave you] together, the payout will not exceed the cap (it might have been £500k, last time I checked).

I think the bookmakers also use some clever calculation which takes into account a "knock on effect" that influences odds. Say, for example, there are only two teams in a league:-

Team A is 1/1 to win
Team B is 1/2 to get placed second.

A bookmaker will let you do either bet but, if you combine them into a forecast then the odds will be reduced, simply because backing Team A to win already implies that Team B will be second place. It's been a number of years since I've looked at anything like this but I'm sure there's someone amongst us who can confirm?

Anyway, if that's correct then there'd be ever-diminishing odds throughout the calculation of the permutation bet (in other words, an uncapped payout for naming 20 teams in order would probably not be very much more than an uncapped payout for naming the top 16 teams in order.)

Well yes. (D'oh) That's just 20!

An easy problem after all.

It's time we had a bump on this thread.

On Tuesday ManUre come to St. James' Park after being beaten by Citeh today.

For all prawn sandwich munchers everywhere I thought it would be kind to post this link.

15 years is but a blink to your average Toon fan.

1 year is an eternity if you're from Blackpool though.

Actually i have enjoyed the pool games this season, seeing them on TV every week has been very enjoyable, win or loose. :p

Will they stay up? I doubt it very much, but the cash injection into Bloomfield Road has been very welcoming.

We may now actually have a stadium fit for the Championship. Something we did not have 1 year ago.

That's our 40 points then: I can start to look forward to next year's premiership with confidence.

Jolly good.
