This is probably one of the biggest issues facing democracy at the moment. The Germans call it "the lying press". If the people don't agree with the political elite, silence their voice, hide the truth.

.

How preposterous. Can't they make do with one of those big boxy ones, ideally black and white. And no cable. Coming over here and watching all our reality TV shows for free. Ridiculous.

It doesn't appear to work very well.

So cold in Newcastle - fortunately her father though Canada was too far away, eh.

I expect they're living in a council house in Cowgate.

Good article. It must be horrendous to be at a critical education juncture (high school / A-level) and be shunted around camps. The two young women make an excellent point about the need for young Muslim women to prioritise education. At least Newcastle/UK is helping with that.

It is a shame though that some refugees are turning their noses up at Canada. I don't think Canada should be trying to persuade such people, just simply offering the opportunity should be sufficient.

When "refugees" are choosy it could be reasonably be considered to indicate that things are perhaps not quite as desperate as some should have everyone believe. A few weeks ago there was a BBC article featuring a young man who's main complaints were that he couldn't work or go to university.

I have no particular issue with the UK and Canada accepting relatively small numbers of people claiming to be refugees. There is a class of them at the Junior High School the youngest child goes to. It would have been better if the election refugee auction was won at 10k rather than 25k but it is what it is. The various features on the CBC following the refugees are essentially free political advertising.

The CBC's coverage of refugees is so one sided it's really embarrassing. Then you have all the promoted (by CIC) #refugeeswelcome twitter ads! I wonder how much they cost?

Or it could be an antidote in an attempt to balance the one sided approach of the rest of the media.

The change of tone in Austria has been incredible in the last few months. The fact that Austria has a credible anti-immigration party (unlike Germany) probably has a lot to do with it as many politicians were facing unemployment if they didn't change course.

"Vienna (AFP) - Austria's interior minister said Wednesday the country would cap the daily number of asylum claims at 80 to slow down the migrant flow at its southern borders.

In addition, the government will grant entry to a total of 3,200 migrants per day "who want to seek asylum in a neighbouring state"

The daily limit on asylum claims is in line with Austria's announcement last month that it would only take in 37,500 asylum seekers this year -- sharply down from the 90,000 it accepted in 2015.

Since January, the country of nearly nine million has already received 11,000 asylum claims, or around 250 a day."

Austria to accept only 80 asylum claims per day

With all the dead Turkish soldiers, If Erdogen needed an excuse to invade northern Syria he's just been given it.
