Peaceful celebrations eh..... Looks like there is a blackout on negative news regarding migrants.

As Oak said, Australia doesn't have the best reputation for dealing with refugees, an this ad does something to change perceptions of what refugees can become - a benefit to society rather than a continual burden. A very good reminder IMO. Although given that it was commissioned by UWA, its primary purpose is general feel good / emotive marketing towards the university and possibly to encourage new Australians to apply.

He might even be considering some heathery himself. ;)
Yasser usually eats only halal meat, which posed a problem when Christmas came round and he joined me at my parents’ place near Morecambe in Lancashire. The Muslim population there is close to zero, and my mother was struggling to source a halal turkey. I explained this to Yasser. He thought about it and said that, because my parents are Christians and Christmas is a Christian holiday, their turkey will be holy; halal basically means holy, so he could have it. |

I liked the reasoning behind accepting the Turkey as Halal. Sounds like the sort of thing one might get thrown off a roof for.

Re: Syrian refugee crisis.
New York Times Article "Germany on the Brink" Makes the point that whilst Germany is a country of 80m the twentysomething population was less than 10 million in 2013 or about 5m males. As the vast majority of the migrants/refugees are young males of that age group its not unreasonable to estimate Germany may already be looking immigration rates approaching 20% of the relevant demographic in the last 2 years. If they were all culturally similar to the Germans that would be expected to cause huge problems so when you add in massive cultural differences a disaster appears almost inevitable.
