Really? We lived on the South Downs between horsham and Worthing and we would get them. Not as many as here but they were there... At least we don't get horse flies here 😜

We get large airborne insects that bite chunks of flesh out of people. I thought they were horse flies but they may be deer flies, either way, they're horrible.

I thought they were the same. Anyway yes they bite chunks out of you...you can actually feel them doing it. For me a deer/horse fly bite takes months to go away.

Well don't send them down this way.

I'll rephrase then...at least we don't get the black fly. They are nasty!!

We have deer / horse flies in the Hamilton area - I got bitten badly a couple of years ago while at an outdoor concert at Gage Park,, nasty things they are. Watch out for sand fleas too!

I lived in Worthing, many many moons ago (and yes, there were mozzies there and other nasty biting critters).

Not many mossies back in Bedfordshire. There were evil midges up north though

The mosquitoes have been awful this year with all the rain and standing water. Deer flies, horse flies, elephant flies...

No snakes to talk of in the UK

Except for those areas that have been repopulated with adders, courtesy of the "conservationists".

Do you have a problem with protecting an endangered species...?

Walkers crisps. Other than that I'm grateful to be able to live in Canada. Very grateful and thankful.

I used to live on the edge of the New Forest. Plenty of Adders and Grass Snakes there. I never heard of anyone being bitten. They tend to just steer clear of you.

Good things about the UK:

The people - banter, humour, down to earth and straight forward.
Culture
Nightlife
Architecture
Rugby (both codes)
Footie
Country Pubs/Pub Gardens
Real Ale
Street/Farmers Markets
You can walk in/on the Countryside/Coastline
The BBC
Ridiculous tabloid papers
Decent Newspapers
Chippies
Curry Houses that are open until 4 am
Special Fried rice with Pork Prawns and Chicken and Curry sauce.
Proper Pies - Steak and Kidney Chicken Balti, Pork etc
Pubs that are heaving on a Friday lunchtime/Weekday night with people mixing and talking to one another.
Mild Weather all year round.
People know how to drive.
Fruit, Veg, Booze and Dairy wont bankrupt you.
Price tags/stickers that dont lie to you.

Some of these have been done to death on here and there are of course many more but these were just a few that for me are the things I like and miss the most.

My original post made no mention of people being bitten but was merely in response to the statement that "there are no snakes to speak of in the UK.

However, here's one example, from the BBC -

. 23 April 2011
From the section Hampshire & Isle of Wight
A nine-year-old girl is recovering in hospital after being bitten by what doctors believe was a venomous adder snake in Hampshire's New Forest.
Tyler Butcher was bitten by the poisonous reptile on her foot in Bolderwood on Friday afternoon.
I also used to live on the edge of the New Forest and heard reports other than this one, both about the New Forest and in other areas.
