Now if I've got one cent, I like to spend it wisely but I'm open to lavish expenditure if I've been drinking and I've been drinking. So I wonder what's available for a night's lounging around apres jaunt. What I'm looking for is free parking and a free breakfast. Now I know that I'm not a good businessman and I know that I've come first in the 'He's the one' in the 2015, 2016 and 2017 'who's the easiest mark in town' so I'm just a little careful. Looked on the web and I know that hotels are hotels and that parking's for parking people so why can't they get together and offer free parking? Don't they realise that we just like to know how much it's going to cost. We'll be spending the money we've saved on bottles of bubbly and driving home. Takes 40 minutes and Vancouver loses out to a couple of of sozzled oldies. |

Better yet, would be to keep the pigs as school pets, and teach the children to be considerate to them. And not send them to the abatoir when they are old, but let them live their lives.
If you don't agree that pigs should be reared for food, then that's great - don't eat bacon. But keeping a livestock animal as a pet is a wholly false narrative. Pigs have been bred - for a couple of thousand years - for their meat. While there are some cutesy big breeds, such as the small Vietnamese pot-bellied variety, I suppose one could keep as a pet, that is not the norm. I find that I feel really quite strongly about this, which surprises me a little to be honest. It is very important that children should know where food comes from, should have some connection to the husbandry and production of food sources of all kinds. The school in question is in Lymington, a small town with a significant rural population around it - so I imagine there are more than a handful of pupils to whom the rearing of poultry, pigs and other livestock is not unfamiliar. Even so, there will be far too great a number of children in the school who have no idea that the sausages they wolf down at teatime are in any way connected with the pigs in their school sty. That is a terrible thing. Frankly, any sensible campaigner for informed choice (which may well lead to more people becoming vegetarian or vegan as they grow up) should be all in favour of this school's animal husbandry. It can only possibly be a good thing for all the children involved. The parent who complained - and reached out to the "vegan community" to mobilise a petition - is the worst kind of proselytizing do-gooder that gives every other vegan a bad name and makes them the butt of jokes everywhere. Shame on them. |
Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
It's certainly a shame that we perpetuate the notion that a pig's life is solely to end up as bacon or sausages! A more enlightened 21st century approach for the school would be to keep the pigs, and teach the kids to respect their rights to life. That's not something they will learn on the farm or in their rural area. I can't say I feel that strongly about it, but I do see the "do-gooder vegan's" point of view, and wouldn't disparage them about it.

On a more philosophical level, we know that plants respond to outside stimuli, eg the well known response of sunflowers to sun position, so I make the argument that simply because we haven't recognised the plant equivalent to a central nervous system doesn't mean that one doesn't exist. Thus, arguments put forward for not culling animals for food can also be used to argue against the harvesting and eating of living plants. Statements like 'They're usually anesthetized from the refrigeration process' accept the possible existence of 'plant thought processes' and expose the hypocracy of the anti-meat argument. |

https://science.howstuffworks.com/li...-feel-pain.htm According to researchers at the Institute for Applied Physics at the University of Bonn in Germany, plants release gases that are the equivalent of crying out in pain. Using a laser-powered microphone, researchers have picked up sound waves produced by plants releasing gases when cut or injured. Although not audible to the human ear, the secret voices of plants have revealed that cucumbers scream when they are sick, and flowers whine when their leaves are cut [source: Deutsche Welle]. There's also evidence that plants can hear themselves being eaten. Researchers at the University of Missouri-Columbia found that plants understand and respond to chewing sounds made by caterpillars that are dining on them. As soon as the plants hear the noises, they respond with several defense mechanisms [source: Feinberg]. |

On the way home from Palm Desert. Only 5.5 hours from home. Been doing the drive home in 6 to 7 days.
Going down with only 1 overnight stop was too tiring. Motel 6 has gotten really frugal. No shampoo anymore. But no pet fee and nearly all are pet friendly. No free wifi at most as well. |

Biological reactions, but it's an analogy too far to suggest they 'feel' anything; even insects are said to have insufficient capacity to feel pain. Mammals are a different story, and intelligent mammals, such as pigs, even feel emotional pain.
I would make another, equally difficult to prove, assertion based on little more than common sense that 'nature' would not have evolved species that weren't able to react to threat and injury and in order to react they must sense it. Whether this sense would be what you would understand as pain is unlikely but would be equivalent in 'their' sensory world. |

Being able to plan and book using the internet is a big improvement over the old days when I was on holiday with my parents and sometimes we drove past miles and miles of motels with NO VACANCY signs lit up until we could find a place to pull in. |

We didn't make concrete reservations but none of the motels looked full. I just chose Motel 6 since nearly all take pets and they don't require a credit card and permit one to check in with cash only, downside is no shampoo... We are finally home..Never doing that again. Cheaper to fly and way less tiring. In other news found an old report card from 1987, first quarter teacher seemed optimistic, wrote I tried hard in class. 2nd quarter she wrote, difficulty keeping up with class and falling behind. By the last quarter, he has great difficulty in academics, especially difficult with math, he has not mastered math and needs significant educational assistance a public school cannot provide. Interesting reading comments at 38 that teachers wrote 30 some odd years ago. |

So school is supposed to be where we get educated in a variety of topics such as Maths, History, Geography and now it seems illegal streaming and porn.
Parents were furious after schoolgirls as young as nine were accidentally shown porn at school instead of the new Paddington 2 film. Croft Academy in Walsall streamed the film which was released in November. Did they stream it legally  'We asked a member of staff if they had even watched the film beforehand and they had not. Ever heard of quality control and vetting? http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...hown-PORN.html |

On another note, I hate how companies are forcing people to download apps and assume every customer has a mobile device, and not having a website to utilize their product. Same with US companies assuming all customers have cell phones and only having text verification as a mode to verify to access an account, who thought of that idiotic idea? |

We do have a very basic smart phone but it's not capable of holding all the apps companies seem to expect people to have. We have a very basic android with minimal storage space. I am constantly removing apps to download another to use, then removing, downloading etc, even work requires an app to check my work schedule. I'd get a better phone if they were not like $500+ |

Glad I am not the only one not using mobile devices for everything. I really can't stand using tablets, takes too long to accomplish anything, I can type far faster on a PC keyboard.
Gas is getting crazy high, 1.47/liter and expected to go higher. Insanity how expensive its getting here. Time to rethink living in Canada as there seems to be no long term future for us here, cost of living is too high, taxes too high, and wages not high enough. |

What a bunch of luddites you all are. Embrace the modern age chaps and chappesses and snapgrambook your lives!;)
Smartphone apps can actually be useful. I use banking ones, flight tracking and booking ones, Uber (when in London) plus kindle. Plus I actually redeemed some Canadian Tire money the other day after switching to the app & collecting credit via the app rather than collecting the paper notes putting them away and forgetting to ever take them to the store to use em. Flipp is also useful to keep track of flyers and whats on sale. (Sometimes while actually in the grocery store). I do find it virtually impossible to write anything long or meaningful on a tablet and especially smartphone though. Big fingers, small phone and all that. So to do any real work it has to be laptop all the way. |
