From the article it says he was born to an Iranian father and British mother...one would think he would have been a British citizen and entitled to leave the airport once liased with the British authorities to claim citizenship.

His mother was British so he would not automatically be a British citizen, Plus he said he had lost all his documents. Shabby treatment all round for the poor man

I agree. It seems he just fell through the cracks. A shame.

I'm struggling to get enthusiastic about this World Cup. I love the WC, it's usually the most exiting sporting thing ever for me, but this one with all the political/social/cultural issues is just soul sapping. I'll watch and hope that England, US, Wales ( as a child I always cheered on Scotland but they're rubbish atm) and Canada do well but just with a lot of anxiety about this tournament.

I suspect I will watch very little of it, I'm unhappy that it was ever given to Qatar, which was heavily influenced by financial considerations (a polite way of saying bribery), the treatment of the workers building the stadia, of 650 died due to failure of safety policies. The UK has been inundated by World and European Championships in the last few months, Football (Soccer for US people) Rugby Union, Rugby League, Gymnastics etc But England have won some of them, The Womens Euros, Mens Wheelchair Rugby League. Medals in the Gymnastics.

Normally by now I have rewatched "on the march with Bobby's army" and other compilations; made a note of dates and times of most matches so as not to make arrangements that clash; completed a spreadsheet to try and project the later knockout ties; read the articles about teams and venues, players to watch out for etc.

Not this time.

But I have watched the video of the latest version of the greatest football song ever.

I think the tournament may not even finish, once a fan is shot by the trigger happy security the Saudis have drafted in its game over. I also think that all the injuries that are keeping top players out are injuries of convenience because the players don't want to go. Bet they are all miraculously fit once the tournament is over

I hope I"m able to blast that at a couple of scottish and welsh guys I know who have a viceral hatred for any England success. Greatest football song...what about the New Order one. World in Motion.

Any predictions. England to make it to the quarters or semis and hopefully Maguire will be on the bench.

For the 1998 World Cup, the 'official' song was by Echo and the Bunnymen, Ocean Colour Scene, Space and the Spice Girls. I can't imagine that Echo and the Spice Girls had much in common. One of my favourite groups with one I can't stand.

To be honest, I have no interest in the World Cup this year, and it's all down to the fact that it's in Qatar only because they bribed their way to get it, and then killed over 6,000 immigrant workers, making them work in unsafe conditions. Then there is also the fact that they are actively imprisoning and execution people because of their sexuality. There are plenty of other channels, and I was watching football today, WSL between Chelsea and Spurs.

My sentiments as well, albeit I was watching one or the other matches.

I've decided that from January 1st, I'll only be watching videos in 1080p or higher. It's my New Year's Resolution.

Nushka met a spicy creature last week. A week later, she's all better and the spicy thing is in a trap waiting for the trapper man to collect it. It will go in the cooking pot apparently.https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/british...12390c6f73.jpg

Yes a porcupine got into her area. We've never seen one before. We were at the emergency vet within 15 minutes. An hour later she had been knocked out, quills removed and was ready to come home. The vet said there was just over 20 quills and she was the nicest chow she's ever met. Never want that to happen again.

I have never seen one either. Hope my dog never sees one either. 😱

Good to know she received prompt treatment and is A-OK.

I'm not allowed to feed the birds anymore. It was attracting the animal. It's a bummer because I was getting some lovely birds. Now I have a massive bag of seed to give away. Lol.

I understand some places have bi-laws against such things.

My mother in law gets through about $20 a week on peanuts in shells for the squirrels but plenty of birds join in too.
This is my MIL

Glad to hear Nushka is okay now. Porcupine quills look so painful - good that you were able to get her seen so quickly.

Our doctor is retiring. There is not a single doctor in the Red Deer area accepting patients. More are retiring. There are no new ones coming. We have been advised to ask friends to ask their drs if they will take us on.

What a nightmare.

I keep hearing stuff like that. Provinces trying to incentivise doctors to move too.

You can't just tell yourself you'll be okay because your doc is too young to retire because they may be enticed over the border. :(
