Worked my first night shift Saturday (2100-0100) and while we got off at 0210 due to a maintenance issue, and there is no real break, it's a far nicer shift, almost like having every day off as you are free nearly the entire day.

That's not a long shift either - perhaps one you could opt in for on a regular basis? Home by 2 ish, asleep by 3'ish - up around 10am and you have the rest of the day to do with as you will - maybe a 2 hour snooze in the afternoon at some point.

Sounds perfect to me!

Since we moved here (Moncton) in 2005 it was noticeable that in our area people appeared to be tucked up in bed - or sitting in darkness, given the lack of any lights on in nearby houses - by about 10.00pm.

And up early too.

In today's paper there's a letter from someone, who appears to have at least one letter every week, complaining about people mowing their lawns too late...about 8.00pm.

"I profess to being asleep around 11 or so but a lot of people do not stay up late."

He makes it sound like 11 is late.

11 is late to us early risers...lol.

Bloody cheek. I didn't start using it until I was past 40 and I still use it now for larking about.

I recently opened Paint 3D believing it to be 'just the latest version' with W10 and I was horrified. Didn't have a clue where to start. Fortunately I found the 'proper' one.

I don't understand this "feature poor" argument. Is there something wrong with 'basic' and 'advanced' (or enhanced) options?

Just about everywhere you go in life there are basic or standard services/products with premium add-ons - like TV packages, internet speeds, phones, memberships, even Amazon services etc - so why in the computer world does everything have to be all or nothing just because someone designs something else?

Why the hell can't you get word, excel and outlook together, for example, without having to pay for all the other bits. I'm never going to be making professional (or any other kind) presentations FFS

It's Outlook, the original, I like. The free Outlook I dislike as much as gmail. I'm actually using Thunderbird in place of 'proper' Outlook and Kingsoft for spreadsheet and word.

The laptop I'm transitioning from has Office 2007 but support is ending for that soon so there's little point in moving it over to the new W10 lappie.

I'd happily pay a reasonable single sum for the proper Outlook, Word and Excel...none of this annual fee for stuff I'm not even going to look at let alone use.

But so far, Kingsoft and Thunderbird are satisfactory.

I use Open Office its free. For letters I use readwritethink letter generator again its free and very easy to use for both personal and business letters.

Yep, Open Office, Libre, Kingsoft...all free. I settled for Kingsoft as it was smaller.

But it's really proper Outlook I miss.

Thunderbird is okay but I'm not convinced the odd email doesn't disappear for no obvious reason.

How old a version are you looking for? There's a 2013 edition free on Microsoft, you would have to run it in 'compatibility for Windows7' I think.

That looks just like my 'false alarm' earlier.

I found what purported to be just Word but it was the whole Office suite. It wanted you to accept a couple of other things which I declined. It all seemed to work but the install failed to complete.

I tried it three times, even accepting Avast (expecting to just uninstall it later) but it didn't work at all.

I just tried two of those Outlooks and they had the very same appearance as the one I tried earlier except that declining the other 'offers' of additional installs meant the Outlook install wouldn't even start.

I got it to install (supposedly) but it doesn't appear to be anywhere on my computer! Very strange...

Sorry Bristol, if I find a workaround I'll let you know.
