BC Public Service have a weird way of doing job interviews. Local government here is what I'd consider 'normal' interview - interviewer has questions, you sit down, they ask them, there's back and forth, you can talk, clarify, question back, etc. Provincial? You get given the full list of questions when you arrive, and 20 minutes to study. That is everything you'll be asked, handed to you. Then they show up, read the questions out in full, and write notes as you answer. When you're done talking, they read out the next question.
I suppose it allows for a more 'objective' outcome rather than judging how a conversation goes, but there's no need to be in the same place, they could just video applicants & then watch them all back to back. It's not so much an interview as 'give five short speeches on these topics'. |

I rediscovered Tea.
Never been a great tea lover but did enjoy Tesco Assam teabags with the cold meats, salmon, sausage roll and christmas cake teatime stuff at my mother's house decades ago. I'm sure it's available here if you look hard enough but all I ever saw were breakfast blends with some Assam. So a couple of years ago I bought some off Amazon in a funny bag. It was not a good flavour. My stepdaughter bought some of Whittards version from Home Sense - it's amazing some of the food things they get in there - but I think the one from Amazon put me off. We came across the packet so I tried one today. Very nice. I just had another. It won't replace coffee but I can mix it up a bit. Not literally. |

Jeopardy!: Even decent competitors only limit Holzhauer to a $49,600 win.

Trying to see a doctor sometimes is frustrating. I will try again tomorrow. The province really should lift the cap they place on walk in clinics so they can stay open their full day and not reach their limit within 2 hours of opening.

James Holzhauer had his closest game so far yesterday on Jeopardy!, if they can keep finding challengers like that, this will only get more exciting.

Quote from this article is a scary thought. Hopefully science will find a way to combat the growing threat of antibiotic resistant bacteria.

It's a frightening view of the future should anti-biotics become non effective. You'll see that as time passes, especially after WW1 the proportion of children dying does fall but, the grim reaper still takes his cut compared with recent times. |

Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
Anyone surprised how many fivers are still in circulation and used in change?
Maybe I'm remembering it wrong but if I was getting £7 or £8 change in the UK it was usually 3x£2 and £1 or £2 x4. Hardly ever a fiver. If I get $7 or $8 here, it's $5 plus the coins. Even if I'm getting $15-$19, the chances are there will be 3 x $5 involved and no $10. The introduction of the £2 coin in the UK greatly reduced the need for fivers but we also have a $2 coin here and yet fivers-a-plenty. |

Guess it makes sense they are popular, easier to make change with a $5 vs all coins, not really too keen on getting all coins if I am getting $6 or $8 back. |

Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
$5 notes are useful .............. if we stay in a hotel, I leave a $5 + thank you note every morning for the hotel maid.
$5 is the usual minimum tip I give the person who takes me in a golf cart or wheelchair from the Lounge in the Railway Station to the train. We usually go away on our Christmas trip across Canada with at least $50 in fivers between us ........... because, strangely, we rarely get $5 in change during those 3-4 weeks  |

I like old houses like that. Oh the TV in the photo, haven't seen one of those since I was very young.
Old houses like that have character. Using the calculator on the realtor site, a mortgage on that house would be $1,100 cheaper per month then our apartment. |

It's times like this I wish I was in San Diego. I find Vancouver an incredibly boring city, and not a whole lot to do. Stanley Park and Sea Wall get boring after a few times.

Kamloops is having crazy long waits for ultrasounds. Shortage of qualified workers. 2,500 patients booked with another 1,800 waiting for an appointment.
https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/briti...unds-1.5132345 I am getting a non-urgent ultrasound in Vancouver as a comparison and only waiting 2 weeks. |

I've gotten used to just taking my requisitions for x-ray and ultrasound to Mayfair Diagnostic 2 blocks from work and getting in without an appointment. It's a private company with 13 locations in Calgary and 1 in Regina. Longest I've ever had to wait was less than a half hour. My guess is the dept of health finds it easier to contract out to Mayfair for those things and LifeLabs for blood and specimen work than trying to run it themselves.
I go to life labs as its in the same building we live in, so literally just have to go down 1 level and there, but I know VGH does have outpatient lab you can go to if you desire, but most people likely live/work closer to a life lab location, although a few times the doctor has asked me to go to the hospital lab instead, never asked why though. When I lived in Squamish the only lab was at the hospital, same with X-ray more advanced imaging had to go to Vancouver or Whistler. Seems the issue in Kamloops is a shortage of qualified Medical Sonographers. |
Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
LifeLabs can have a considerable wait time (especially if you're in for fasting bloodwork) early in the morning, and people are usually lined up outside. They have a new thing there now; an electronic sign saying how long the estimated wait currently is, and I think there's an option to register then have them text you when your number is getting close, so you can go shopping in the mall instead of just sitting still.

This guy is living the dream. I would live to have a fish room and such large tanks. (he is one of the most popular fish folks on youtube.)
This looks like an interesting show. https://www.aetv.com/shows/the-emplo...s-preview-list I was looking at job listings in Edmonton, and came across one for the hotel I worked at in 2006-2007 when I lived there, pay being offered is the same exact they were paying in 2006, crazy how wages don't seem to move. |
