The dog escaped on Thursday. We have a little patio and I put up a baby gate between the 2 walls by the door on the outside so she could have a little time in the sun outdoors.

The baby gate is 2 feet tall, and apparently a little dog with short little legs found a way to get over the gate. No way she could around or below it, only way was over it.

Luckily she only got as far as the side walk, and she wasn't running off, just laying on the side walk in the sun.

For our flight schedule out of the 9 hours we work about 4.5 to 5 in total. 3-4 flights a day per crew on average.

We can offload and load a plane in about 30 mins of bags and cargo.

I have often been impressed with the speed that baggage from my flight has made it to the carousel.

On the other hand I remember sitting on a plane in France watching baggage handlers tossing other people's stuff around :ohmy:

We don't go out of our way to damage or throw bags, but the heavier the bag the more force it takes for a human to move it and move it quickly. As I tell everyone I know, pack light, the lighter the bag the less chance of damage.

Honestly the automated baggage sorting thingers are harsher on the bags then we are, you would be surprised how much force the automated systems use to push bags off at the correct pier.

From arrival of the aircraft we have 20 mins to get the bags to the baggage claim at customs, and we meet that goal 98.8% of the time currently.

Usually the reason for us taking more then 20 mins is waiting for another airline to finish offloading bags at the same claim belt. If our bags get stuck behind a 777 or 747 arrival at the claim belt, well it can take those flights 20-30 mins to off load all the bags.

At Christmas we went to France (daughter living in Nice). Return flight was Nice-Zurich, Zurich-Montreal, Montreal-Ottawa

The time in Zurich we spent was 40 minutes from the time we landed on the flight from Nice until we took off to Montreal. In that time, we had to get off the plane, walk across the tarmac for 30 seconds, get on a bus, wait for all the passengers to get on the bus, drive to the terminal, run through the terminal, get on a train within the airport to go to the other terminal, go through security, get our passports stamped, run to Montreal flight. We made it and literally 10 minutes after we got on the plane to Montreal, the Montreal plane pulled away from the gate.

Staff on the Nice-Zurich flight (Swiss Air) assured us our luggage would be on the Montreal bound flight and it was.

That seems to be very efficient. Kudos to Swiss Air (also the Zurich/Montreal flight) and Zurich airport in general.

JSmith...you are in a job that is underappreciated but crucial. Hats off to people like you who can get the job done quickly and in all types of conditions.

It can be and is a crucial part of passenger flights.

Used to be a well paid career job, but most airlines are outsourcing now and the wages fairly low, certainly not a long term career anymore.

Most of the time when a bag misses a flight it's because of the automated systems and not humans. At YVR when we don't load a bag its almost always for 3 reasons:

1. It got "lost" in the airports baggage system and dropped to the pier after the flight left or closed out.

2. US Customs delayed the bag and it arrived after the flight left or the flight was closed out.

3. The bags are coming from another airline and they didn't transfer the bag.
