Like singing the Canadian Anthem, it's not guna be a tear jerker for a Brit is it. But at least you aren't wanting to make changes to the way its been done for years just to suit your own schedule and personal beliefs. :@)

I just crossed me fingers at that point. Then promises doesn't count, everyone knows that.

Daft Irish bugger's dad's fight for a republic was wasted on his emigrant son.

When it's my turn I might fight it in court too.
After all by the nature of my nationality do I not already have allegiance to the Queen? Why do I need to do it again?

Quite. I found it strange being asked to swear an oath of loyalty to her when I was already supposed to be loyal as a result of being born on her lands.

Mrs. JonboyE had to swear an oath of loyalty twice. Once to become British and again to become Canadian. She is obviously twice as loyal as me. At least she doesn't throw things at the TV whenever it mentions the impending birth.

Why would you want to be a citizen of a country whose customs you object so much to?

Actually, no you haven't. The oath is allegiance to the Queen of Canada not the Queen of Great Britain, Northern Ireland, etc etc. They may be the same person but the meaning is different.

What power? When was any such power last exercised?

Pretty ridiculous. It's not like being told you have to pay more tax than the rest of Canadians or do national service first.

Using that same analogy, PRs and Citizens are both expected to comply with the speed limits but they haven't singled one group out for special attention. PRs don't have to take part in a ceremony to enable them to drive.

I'm not bothered either way - apart from believing that PR's (with a qualification period) should be able to vote without the need of citizenship.

For a country with gay marriage and all the other principles enshrined in law it just seems a tad outdated.
