Great news for me tho ........ she has just booked a flight & is visiting in June, it will be almost 4yrs by then since we've seen each other & my kids have changed SO much ........ I can't wait!! No, you're way out, wasn't the Hen & Chick in Bedminster?

That's awful about your Mum, makes your heart ache. So glad she's recovered and you'll have a great time. My mum used to have me in tears when she'd ask when am I coming home - even when I'd been here almost 30 years. So I spent a fortune going back every single year, sometimes twice. But she was worth it.

We have just joined this forum today so 'AYE UP' everyone from us ex-Yorkshire folk!

This is our 5th winter here in Canada (& bloody cold one!) but only miss a few things from the UK and they are

Family & Friends (although we get lots of visitors and use the webcam lots)
Social life is very different here (miss pub crawls!)
Closeness of everything (don't have to go far for a change of scenary)

The pro's far outweigh the con's and we would never go back to the UK

Good luck in whatever you decide to do

It's going to be great (I hope) ....... my kids can't wait as they say I go from being 'in control mom' to female (& much older!!) 'kevin' when I'm around her :)
She walks with the aid of a stick now so getting her onto the seaplane is going to be fun!!

Years ago, after my dad died, my Mum joined a singles dancing club that used to meet at the Hen and Chick weekly. She met a really nice old fella there, who came with her to visit us here in Canada, back in the 80's. When he died, his daughters told me that his visit here was the highlight of his life and he never stopped talking about it. My kids also had the time of their lives on that visit, and great memories.

As for the seaplane, my OH also uses a cane and managed to negotiate getting on and off one of those with a little help, so I'm sure your Mum will be fine. People from Brissle is tough, anyways me babby

Please also post in the Moving Back to UK forum or at least review posts there. Doing so combined with feedback from this forum, will lead to a far more objective view. Personally I would not recommend a move. Many do and are happy, but many do and are not. Check out the other forum for a bit of balance and good luck with whatever you decide.

Just because many others are happy or unhappy is not a reason to do (or not) something. Whilst I agree a varied and objective view is necessary, each persons perception of any given situation can be different.

To the OP, why do you want to move to Canada. If you have a reason to move (as opposed to a reason to leave the UK) then you're probably more likely to settle here. I came here for love, others for work, yet more for the perceived better quality of life.

I think we're in agreement over this. But that's the point of having an objective perspective is to consider other people's reasons and form your own.

The danger, however, in just looking at the Maple Leaf forum is that it will predominantly be biased in favour of moving to or staying in Canada. Not that there's anything wrong with this, just I would urge anyone before making a big decision to get as much objectivity as possible. Then decide.

Nobody can find the answers in individual posts, but looking at opinions of others covering different in an objective way will allow people to gain a strong perspective and make their own mind up.

Dunno why curry would be a problem. We eat Indian a couple of times a month, in Toronto's Little India, in Brampton, even in Guelph. Vancouver also has a large Indian population. You must be able to get to Vancouver or Toronto.

You are right, Vancouver has some great indians. However, without a bunch of pissed up Brits, onion barjis, Carling Blacklabel and a name like Lancashire Tandoori - it just does n't seem the same.

That's likely me you are referring to. I felt really cut down by you and in my own defense it was like my second post on a blog in my life. You are right - it is just about opinions, of which were are entitled. I think I just felt deflated after being intrigued about the whole expat thing. Silly really.

Wish they had this site when i came here in 1993 - not sure we even had the "tinternet" then!

Hope all is going well with EPS.

It's valuable in enjoying Canada, coming from somewhere awful.

Now affectionately called Shottingham... Friend of mine lives there, someone broke into his house, shot him in the knee and left him for dead then made off in his car, which was subsequently used for an armed robbery....

Sadly I believe you are right.

It was a reasonable place as a child, I had many a good time fishing in the Trent, swimming in Attenborough Gravel Pits (no health and safety or parental controls in those days).

we left Nottingham area early 1996, and moved south to Woking (then watched that place go to the dogs as well.

Yep Nottingham wasn't bad, I left in 1990'ish

Still is wasn't great then I don't think its go worse it just that we've grown up
The violence and fight’s outside the pubs were the norm back in the 1980's to 90's

If anything I think in some areas it’s actually got better over the last twenty years

Well, judging by your nightmare commute stories, yes I would agree! However, you can't judge the rest of
Canada by your experiences - or mine. Reading your posts and mine you wouldn't think we lived in the same country. But Canada is like that, from east to west so different, and then there's the bit in the middle - vastly different again.

You also have to use at least twice the amount to get the same flavour.

Hubbies a mechanic - he knows what he's doing when it comes to windscreen wash, fella;)

When a screen is icy cold and it's -a gazillion outside and the windchill is worse and you squirt washer fluid the wipers spead a thin film over the screen that freezes. Bit scary when your driving.

It is of course a different story if you have started your car 6 hours before you want to use it so it's all nice and warm with a the heater blowing warm on the screen - or if you have a garage space spare to put a car in, in the winter.
