The schools are a million times better, the kids are kids longer, the canadians are more friendly, i don't miss the rain (as a northerner i have had a gut full of getting wet at 3.30pm every school day)

I don't miss the uk driving standards (yeah canadians are not brill, but alot better than where i came from)

We - meaning full family did a list of what we would miss from the uk before we came, top of that was grandparents and friends.
We are lucky as they are visiting this year (or unlucky in some aspects), but as for lifestyle etc i would pick here everyday.

As ruby said the school and history is totally different, but my kids bought history books with them and memory books.
For the quality of teachers and the way the kids learn here, canada comes tops everytime

The only thing i do miss is warburtons bread and hollands pies...........but i am learning to live without them :cry_smile::cry_smile:

I even managed to make my oven paxo at xmas and it was like the real thing :p

I admit to being curious about what seemed your bitterness to all things Canadian in your recent posts and was tempted on occasion to ask the same question as Canzoet. I did look at some of your earlier threads/posts and realized that you've experienced some serious problems along the way and that was most unfortunate. But, why would the death of a loved one back home allow you to turn so vehemently against Canada. Your recent list of 12 dislike/hate items all existed when you arrived a few years ago.

I just wanna stick up for may mate for a second. Ruby Murray has tried damned hard to make it work here. There are days she loves Canada still but the pull of family is too strong for her and she needs to be back with her siblings and other family members. I have noticed that now she has made her mind up to go back and stuff the consquences, she is much happier and positive!:thumbsup: Good for you Rubes:wub:

According to many posters here you will miss absolutely everything, so bring a Tesco/Sainsbury/Waitrose/Asda, M&S etc., with you. We also drive on the WRONG side of the road, have lousy television, clothing styles are years out-of-date, most things (including food) are more expensive,vacation time is ridiculously low, our hydro supply is the wrong voltage, it snows, it gets cold (very cold), our incomes are insubstantial and no doubt many more that don't spring to mind. Drag you back? If I were you I wouldn't come in the first place. When I read of all the things immigrants don't like about Canada I wonder if I should seek counselling because I quite like my life here. I guess I'm the one who's out-of-step.

I think sometimes when you find yourself in a situation like Ruby has, it is easier to leave somewhere if you find loads of faults with a place......it kind of seems to justify how you are feeling inside when you have all the personal issues with family etc. I know i myself have done it with jobs etc, when i have had other serious poo going on in my life. If not and she really is that unhappy, surely she deserves a pat on the back for coming this far and at least having a go, rather than never trying at all. :thumbsup::thumbsup: I wish you all the luck in the world Ruby, and hope you find the happiness, that seems to be evading you at the moment, when you finally get back to your family.:wub::wub:

Sorry if i confused you Brian. I lived in Canada for 8 years before moving back to the UK. What I mean is if I believe all the negative stuff on BE about the UK (which includes Northern Ireland) then I should be seeing a counsellor too.

The upside is that with a British background, and work ethic, and throw in British schooling

You come across as up to date, a modern thinker as well as hardworking and very knowledgeable and often trained to a much higher standard that the locals
Make’s progression in work much easier

It also helps give the impression we have much more talent than we really had back home..

The environment may be a sh1ttyier than home but it makes me appear significantly better because of it

Or put another way
if this is a sh1t sandwich there may be more sh1t in the sandwich, but the greater amount of bread around the sandwich gives the impression of less :D

As part of my research, I've had a look at the returning to the UK section, now admittedly I didn't get very far, about half a dozen pages in to this one thread but basically the general gist is that "the grass isn't always greener" - I was amazed by some of the stories on there about people wanting to move back to the UK and then regretting it as soon as they got here.

Whatever you do I wish you the best of luck, it is a hard decision to move regardless of whether you are coming or going and the logistics can be a nightmare. I know how you feel being trapped somewhere you resent living - I am like that here and it is a horrible feeling.

Hope you get a buyer soon!

Aww Piff..cheers mate :wub::wub: You're the only one this side of the Atlantic beside "W" & the kids that know what I've really gone through these past couple of years. It's hard enough trying to express your experiences, reasons and differences here on the B.E., but my homelife is also like living an Expats forum as you well know!! :( Thanks for sticking by me and supporting me...you have the patience of a saint and are my Agony Aunt in the flesh ;)

P.S. Luna loved yesterday...I hope she's dreaming of all that running now while she rests in her kennel following her operation today...just phoned the vets now and it went very well :thumbsup:


Brianscottie....I know I probably do come across as sounding very bitter and anti-Canada, but I'm not totally. There is still an awful lot here that I do love, and believe me, I doubt and double check myself every minute of the day if giving what I have up here and returning to my old life in the UK is what I really want to do permanently. Missing my parents & my sister who I'm so close with, and her kids has really affected me more since losing my father in law exactly one year ago. It was very traumatic to be over here and get "that phone call at 4am", struggling with the grief, arranging for the flight home, worrying about the money, etc..and it dawned on me that I don't think I could cope with another phone call like that. I would be an absolute basket case if it was for one of my family members. Only my decision to go back home wasn't as simple as that...my OH didn't want to entertain the idea of jacking everything in here so it's been a year of fights and arguments - a power struggle for Canada-v-UK.

I sound bitter purely because I'm powerless in being able to move back home due to my OH and the housing price crash/recession here and it's like I'm being forced to stay here.:unsure:

Thank you Rainey...it is sometimes hard to get my thoughts across without seeming bitter to everyone. It's the helplessness and being stuck without a way out that has turned me bitter and negative....I don't mean to be. Thanks for seeing through that :wub:

Well I have visited N.America loads of times and driven while visiting everytime which does not faze me at all. I only watch US tv shows so that will be ok too I think. I shop in Hollister etc and don't buy clothes in the UK, I just wait until I am over that way. The snow will be a battle but hopefully I will adapt, although it has been -10 here these last few days and I have not found it too bad tbh! Have you ever visited England or lived here?:confused:

Yes and yes again. Lived in UK for 23 years and have been back (visited) over 15 times, so do I like it there?, yes again. Would I like to live there? Do not know sufficient about everyday life to give an honest answer.
