you're not, i got accused of this the other day too, after i voiced some concerns, thoughts and experiences. this after all i contend, is the whole point of the forum. some though seem to have difficulty in accepting posts in this context, feel personally insulted and go on the offensive.

It's not always what you say (write), it's how you say (write) it. Anyone with a degree of intelligence realizes that opinions differ, sometimes greatly, and that's a good thing, but to write with bitterness against the Canadian way suggests that the rest of us have no idea what we're doing by being here.

It was very traumatic to be over here and get "that phone call at 4am", struggling with the grief, arranging for the flight home, worrying about the money, etc..and it dawned on me that I don't think I could cope with another phone call like that.
With you there! The 1st completely unexpected phone call was bad - the second 6 months later was our worst nightmare........As you know my Mums not too well - cancelled plans for a spring break vacation, just in case, I just hope my Mum makes it out here once, just once.

It's something that everyone thinks about when they think of emigrating but until it happens that 1st time you don't really realise.

I'd suggest it’s more about measuring up to expectations, which are just as subjective as opinions

Some are higher, some are lower

and the end result will determine how you feel about the place

Me……set your sights low enough and Canada is a truly awesome place

You write quite scathingly about Britain, so let others criticise Canada if they need to. This site is a good place to vent off, it helps you get through a frustrating Canadian day.

Look...it's called giving a "balanced view"....I don't make these things up just to be awkward and stir up a load of codswallop!! I've had my frustrations in AB, ON & BC - from my perspective, it's a Canada-wide thing. I know the UK has many frustrations itself....but we are talking about us Expats are missing about the UK here on this thread - remember that!! I posted my two-penneth of what I miss about the UK compared to what's not to be found over here and look at the grief you give me! Sorry brianscottie....you can love every goddamn thing about Canada you want, but it ISN'T perfect and not Utopia!! The UK, despite it's negativity, does offer things that, hands down, pish on Canada!! I've said it before and I'll say it again...all those Brits in the throes of their immigration to here...you simply cannot expect to come here thinking it's going to solve all your problems by "escaping the UK and all it's crap" because Canada has it's own crap too! Hey, and even my bloody Canadian counsellor fed me that line yesterday too

Piff...I truly hope your mum recovers and the issue in question is not so serious. Big hugs I'm picking Luna up today...it's been so empty in the house without her...can't wait to see her again

Good post! Can't be PC all the time! We are having to think about these things too. We are trying to get out of the UK but we know that Canada will also have it's own problems that will very likely tick us off, but that's life and no country is without problems!!

Karma for a great post!!

I don't recall writing scathingly about Britain but, without going through the agony of reading all my posts, I accept your statement that I did. I actually very much admire the British way of life. I'm distressed that it's not the way it used to be but at he same time realize that's a foolish thing to say. Nowhere is the way it used to be. Since coming to Canada I have travelled to Britain 15 times and on the last 10 occasions didn't visit one relative. Just wanted to see the country the way I hadn't done before I left. The scenery is wonderful, history magical and the people superb. Didn't experience any crime but also realize that I, like most people, do not get a true/full perspective when on vacation. It's too easy to think things are wonderful when you're throwing money around like a drunken sailor. I have thought about moving back to live a number of times but my lifestyle here coupled with family and friends here soon squashed those thoughts.
Rule Britannia.

Just got off the phone from Mum. Her consultant can't find any reason why she should be yellow and her liver function compromised - no lumps and bumps in strange places. He thinks it may just be a virus. She has to have regular blood tests over the next few weeks so he can keep an eye on her but she should be getting better on her own

Hi PP, that's good new's that your mum should be able to get better on her own. I'm sure we all wish her well in her recovery.

Oh Piff, that's excellent news...well just the good news you need to feel a little easier over here any road! Here's hoping she's on the mend each day - now you will have to wave those airline tickets in front of her so she has no choice of where she's going this year - but here to see you, hubs & grand-daughter!!

Excellent news, you must be so relieved, it must be so hard when you are that far away.
