The director is concluding what is well known and understood. May is offering a watershed of removing legislation that protect the population against the state on the basis of a need to protect them and they will love her for it. Once enacted such laws will remain on the statute books because governments of all parties will want them, it's what they do.
Hard cases make bad laws.

Ah! - The Murdoch press. The most amazing thing I have seen in this fiasco is that George Osbourne, that scion of the Tory right, who now edits the (London) Evening Standard has used his influence to point out May's record of faliures, The Queen of U turns (they are now on version 3 of the manifesto because of 'faux pas') and pointing out that she never managed to reduce immigration after many years as Foreign Secretary, despite 3 manifesto commitments to do so.

Hell hath no fury like a man sacked by a woman.

Perhaps it's stage one in a campaign to become the new leader.

Indeed. I think the previous poster overstates the conclusions drawn in the film but it's years since I've seen it and I'm reluctant to argue fiercely with anyone named for their stockings.

The conservatives included the EU referendum in their 2015 manifesto. They were elected on this basis.

A referendum was held for political reasons in 2015 just as in 1975. The basis of the two referendums was the same. On one occasion remain won on the other occasion leave won.

You seem to be somewhat in awe of the influence of Boris Johnson. He was just one voice among many and not particularly significant.

That's a bit like saying that George Best was just one footballer or that Kim Kardashian was just one celeb.

They might be 'just one' but to under estimate their impact would be a bit silly.

You might elevate Johnson to George Best like status, I don't quite see the comparison myself. Obviously Johnson has some appeal as a politician otherwise he wouldn't have won two mayoral elections in a labour city but to claim he was primarily responsible for Brexit is somewhat ludicrous. There is the alternative simpleton narrative that the DM and straight banana stories caused Brexit.

Hardly. It was Dean in Post 95 that posited "Boris is entirely to blame", and I suggested that Cameron should have equal billing. In fact, I would give Cameron the lion's share of credit for the fiasco. Nevertheless, on these shores, at that time Boris was a significant voice for those who don't bother with written journalism and buy into the rule Britannia myth. Remember he was poised to become post-referendum PM before the treacherous Gove let things get to his head.

I don't dispute the legitimacy of the calling the referendum (nor the result, sadly) I simply contend it was a foolish idea in the first place.

It appears that's not all you don't see.

I wasn't elevating Johnson to Best - or even Kardashian and that should have been really obvious.

It's the impact they have that is comparable. Like being all over the newspapers and the telly.

Turn on the news, look at the newspaper (or website) and Boris is everywhere. That's far more effective than nonsense about just one voice.

Apparently on one post Cameron takes equal "billing" for Brexit with Johnson then the next post its Cameron who takes the lions share and Johnson drops down to just a "significant" voice. Perhaps you could go to Sunderland and see how many people consider Johnson to have given them a voice when they voted for leave to confirm your theory?

FFS, when someone makes a passing comment on a hyperbolic internet post, one doesn't expect a forensic analysis of that and subsequent comments.

Since you seem extraordinarily interested in my impression (and, for the avoidance of doubt, it is only an impression) it's Cameron whom I think is most responsible for what I regard as the fiasco of Brexit. How Sunderland or any other particular county voted or perceived Johnson is irrelevant in the context of a national vote. He and his arguments clearly appealed to enough people, nationwide, to generate the slim majority that brought us to Leave.
