A referendum was held for political reasons in 2015 just as in 1975. The basis of the two referendums was the same. On one occasion remain won on the other occasion leave won.

Obviously Johnson has some appeal as a politician otherwise he wouldn't have won two mayoral elections in a labour city but to claim he was primarily responsible for Brexit is somewhat ludicrous. There is the alternative simpleton narrative that the DM and straight banana stories caused Brexit.

Hardly. It was Dean in Post 95 that posited "Boris is entirely to blame", and I suggested that Cameron should have equal billing. In fact, I would give Cameron the lion's share of credit for the fiasco. Nevertheless, on these shores, at that time Boris was a significant voice for those who don't bother with written journalism and buy into the rule Britannia myth. Remember he was poised to become post-referendum PM before the treacherous Gove let things get to his head.

I don't dispute the legitimacy of the calling the referendum (nor the result, sadly) I simply contend it was a foolish idea in the first place.

Turn on the news, look at the newspaper (or website) and Boris is everywhere. That's far more effective than nonsense about just one voice.

Apparently on one post Cameron takes equal "billing" for Brexit with Johnson then the next post its Cameron who takes the lions share and Johnson drops down to just a "significant" voice. Perhaps you could go to Sunderland and see how many people consider Johnson to have given them a voice when they voted for leave to confirm your theory?

FFS, when someone makes a passing comment on a hyperbolic internet post, one doesn't expect a forensic analysis of that and subsequent comments.

Since you seem extraordinarily interested in my impression (and, for the avoidance of doubt, it is only an impression) it's Cameron whom I think is most responsible for what I regard as the fiasco of Brexit. How Sunderland or any other particular county voted or perceived Johnson is irrelevant in the context of a national vote. He and his arguments clearly appealed to enough people, nationwide, to generate the slim majority that brought us to Leave.
