"Where shall we go for our holidays dear? I was thinking of France but they got rid of their monarch so it'll have to be England."

So if the people decided that they didn't want a monarchy, what would happen to all the land? More to the point, who owned all the land prior to the crown, and how did the crown acquire it?

As I said earlier, I am comfortable with the notion of a monarchy, it seems to appeal to a sizeable proportion of the population. I am, however, very uncomfortable with the apparent acceptance that this monarchy lives a life of quite remarkable and unapologetic luxury and indulgence.
My mum used to work in a pub that they frequented when Cowes week was on. She said that they attention they were subjected to was far too oppressive for her. I feel the same way about them taking money as I do about other recipients of welfare. I don't believe most on this forum will require me to say what that means. |

Meanwhile, back at the wedding. The usual planning puzzles. Those nice Obamas might make good guests. Protocol says the Trumps would usually come but, Mr. Trump presents a problem due to his being a racist boor likely to goad the public to rioting at the doors. At least it's not a publicly funded event, so the couple do have some influence over the guest list.

I rather agree. However I am neither expected to offer subservience or loyalty to the Kardashians, nor pay for their luxuries.
QE2 I also agree with in the main. As I have said before, my issue is with the less committed but equally well treated extended family. And when the civil list was cut in favour of the sovereign grant a few years ago, the number of people receiving grants was significantly cut. Aside from the Duke of Edinburgh (who has recently retired from public life anyway) who used to receive a grant from Parliament, no other "minor royal" gets anything more than their expenses covered for official duties. The Yorks and Wessexes, along with the Princess Royal, no longer receive Civil List incomes but receive annuities from the Queen's revenue through the Duchy of Lancaster |
Re: Go for it Harry marry Meghan.
I quite like the idea of Her Maj and Philip settling down with a cup of tea and a garibaldi to watch Meghan in Suits. "Shall we watch Harry's young lady in her TV programme Darling?"

They dated for a good six / seven years. Pretty girl. Maybe you're not into blonds.
Maybe it was something to do with with different headlines. I see she met him at an exclusive school so perhaps I paid more attention if headlines said something about being an actress rather than just some other posh totty. |

I remember when they were dating that they always looked so much more in tune with one another, and when you compare pics of Chelsy / Harry with pics of Meghan / Harry there does seem to be more affection with the former than the latter. Think the engagement pics were the first time I've seen any pics of M/H really looking at each other as most of the others show them side by side.

I think it's genuine. It must be a bit of a fairytale outcome for an American, becoming a 'princess' and living in castles and palaces. Give the girl a break!
