I thank you all for your interest. The first ban was for claiming that someone cluttered the threads with "housewifely blather" (amicably resolved before the ban) the second for describing someone as "an idiot". Robust language for sure and not the sort of thing one could hear in a pub or routinely face on the internet, one should feel better for knowing that this sort of vulgarity is stamped out immediately.
Personally, I don't care for this degree of constraint on comment, it's like being on a site run by Canadians. I curse the moderator; he should have to go and live in Mississauga, he should be forced north of the QEW; he should have to suffer life in the void he sells.

This three strikes thing doesn't sound too dissimilar to what the mods have described.
I'm a little confused. You don't want temporary banishment (suspension) but you're not opposed to someone coming back on good behaviour. I thought that was the object of suspension.
The technology does indeed exist to detect someone registering with an alternative name. But I think the technology also exists to fool that technology doesn't it?

On the other hand people have been known to change and if someone, somehow, manages to get back in, under some other alias, and proceeds to conduct himself decently, then my inclination would be to give him a second chance.
Sorry if it all sounds confusing. I didn't put it clearly the first time.
And yes, no technology is foolproof.
(The object should be not to punish or deprive someone from posting but to modify their behaviour.)

I don't believe in temporary bans for anyone (see above) and permanent banishment, which I am inclined to favour for truly hopeless cases, doesn't fit the bill as far you are concerned.
