I accept that peoples perceptions vary - but I reject that personal experience is the whole story. The reason it can't be is that crime rates are similar between the two countries.
I suspect el_richo got it above - you all live in nicer areas than you did in the UK. That and the fact there is less crime reported on the TV means that people feel safer.

The only crime I've ever experienced in Toronto is from City Hall with their exceptionally shonky parking laws and tickets.................yet to see a crime committed in this city after spending 2.5 years of my life here...long may it continue.
I do know a girl who had a break in in Guelph last weekend. She was home and petrified. Luckily the police came fast and the burglar was caught.

In Canada: I've witnessed a shoplifter legging it from the local shoppers drug mart; I've been offered more drugs here than in the UK, i.e. pretty much every time I've been out in gastown; I've had my card skimmed in an ATM denman st. But personally affected? No, I'd say that I've never been a victim of crime, not in Vancouver, or MR, or Bangkok when I lived there, or anywhere in the UK.

I've committed crime in the UK when I was young, but was never a victim. I've lived in lots of places too - but never even saw a crime being committed. Obviously I was incredibly lucky as everyone else was being robbed blind by chavs.

Just take a look at the term "Hoodie". This was born through the media and i dare say has stuck with many people on here to the point where if they were in the UK and saw a group of young men with hooded tops (some wearing the hood up) they may feel threatened or nervous. The same situation in Canada they may feel differently since there is no connotation to that. In reality, they're probably equally as safe in both countries in apple for apple situations.
By the looks of things, Alan2005 is stating the facts and reality, not perception. The OP did ask for personal experience however so in that context everybody's comments are valid.

Doubt you would be secretly cheering if the property concerned was your own.....

And so I have to pay more so other people can get away with stealing. How is this different to industry bailouts? At least that guy was honest about his dishonesty.
