Crime in your area

Has anyone come across any crime in their area of choice??
Lots use the "no crime in canada" "gettin away from crime in uk" statement to justify the big move, but as its been said many times, "crime happens everywhere" Thing is though, does it efect you?
We had a 6 month rental on Lawrence ave and port union, scarborough, ontario in 2008. I left my car unlocked on my drive near the hse and it got robbed. I left my sat nav in the glove box and they got that plus some loose change. Dohh
If anyone has been efected by crime, or heard of anything close to their res then please tell.
I feel there is more crime going on than we are prepared to believe.

I feel a great deal depends on whether you live in an Urban location or as in my case, a Rural one.. As for myself, I have not been a victim as yet and in my close vicinity there have been the odd theft, usually from a boat tied up at the owners docks, however they are few and far between. I have more concerns at the insidious increase in the practice of people discarding rubbish in the form of KFC, MacDonalds packaging, Timmy's cups etc from their vehicles on the highway, the evidence of which a few years back was pretty rare in my experience on our rural roads. Times are a changing.....perhaps the 'British disease' of littering is catching?

Bugger all crime where I am, (if you dont count the base commander going on a killing spee)
Nothing that negatively impacts your quality of life anyway. They still report broken into cars on the radio as newsworthy, complete with advice from the cops to remember to lock the doors. A couple of years ago someone was burgled on my street, and I did hear of a shed that had an attempted break in. No so much to report for 10 years here is it.
Im with Macadian on the littering though, but I still think its great that every year the community turns out for the annual "Trash Bash" to clean up the roadsides etc.

We live about 20 mins east of Edmonton in a town/city of about 80,000 people.
One of the first crime stories that sticks in my mind was the local paper had a half page story about a snowmobile being stolen from someones truck.
A half page story!
So, we're not really affected by crime where we are.
We often hear about stabbings/shootings in Edmonton, but they almost always involve gangs. It's extremely rare to read/hear about the random mindless ASBO type crime that is blighting the UK.

I followed a person last week in toronto and i found out he is a drug dealer, the neighbours seemed ok wi it, as most were customers...lol. We had a dealer living next door to us in Blackpool, till we told the police and they got busted. Hence my fred.
Seems though that all is good here in ontario and few, if any are efected.

well , if you exclude the odd shooting in the entertainment district, then no , no crime at all
I've said this before I have no idea about the actual crime rates but my perception is that crime is low.
I could be living in blissfull ignorance but at least I'm happy

I dont doubt there are a few grow ops around. Shortly after we moved here my wife found about $10k worth of pot plants in the middle of the road, fallen out of someones truck. Im a bit ambivalent about it to be honest. Dont have a problem with pot, but dont like the organised crime it supports.

Its the perception thats important to quality of life. When I lived in leeds I was never the victim of crime, but the possibility was always stalking you, you were wary walking at night, you ALWAYS locked cars and houses, and you know plenty of people who had been victims. Its not like that here thankfully.

Very little around here, from what I can see.
There is pot being traded by teens in the park opposite me, that I do know. When I hear reports of violent crime, I can guess the locations in Gatineau and Hull before I'm told. It's always the bar/strip club areas. Some prat did try to nick our Sunfire a couple of years ago. Sadly, he failed.
Generally, our house is not secured. A while back I discovered that it had been wide-open via the unlocked garage for six months. We didn't get burgled.

exactly. I'd never use my ipod on the london underground as I felt I would be wearing a large " please mug me" target.
However I'm happy to use it on the ttc , and i see people with baclkberries clipped to the back of their pants.
Anyone could take them if they wanted

We see if any reports come in from the west. If all is quiet on here by the end of the day then indeed, Canada is a low crime place to move to.
OH has left her keys in the door of her car a couple o times were we are now, been unable to find them in the hse and then found them in the drivers door. As i said, more than once. Lol

Major "crimewaves" in the news in our 6 years here
Drivers leaving without paying for gas, conman pretending to be a chimney sweep - money discovered missing later, coins (yes, coins) stolen from machines in apartment building laundry rooms and the latest one of a would-be snow plowman taking money for contracts and not turning up to clear snow.
Cases solved, villains caught and locked up.
One kidnapping (victim known to kidnapper)...maybe three or four homicides (drug related or 'domestic') a handful of taxi robbings, the usual convenience store robberies (no physical injuries inflicted), people stealing from employers and DUIs.
We had the front of our house paintballed by someone in the middle of the night. A dozen splatters.

Like others have said a lot is based on perception and the fact that I personally feel a 100's time safer here than in the uk.
Halifax does have an issue with shootings and stabbing, however they all are gang related generally and I have not seen an innocant bystander getting caught up in the problems, like was/is the trend in the uk.
Securing our property has never been a concern here so far, if we forget to lock the car or front door and only realize on the way to work then we tend to keep going rather than turning round and going home again
