A breadmaker is your friend. Seriously. You might take the piss, but we bought one a few weeks ago and its great. 100 bucks and I am churning out all kinds of organic loaves with no added crap. Mine generally don't rise too much, so no floppiness at all. Think solid bricks of proper solid white bread. The good thing is that when you get it a bit wrong (the instructions claim you need to measure precisely, make sure everything is the right temperature - so I tend to ignore these on principle) it just comes out looking like some intentionally rustic country loaf.
Given that you live in Vancouver it could fill many a Friday night for you

I don't know what you thought it was, but does the name not give it away?

(I quite like ceasers when they are done well even though it's a bit of a gay drink)

North American food companies feel the need to put fructose in everything, even table salt.

Don't bother buying the stuff. Just dunk a used tampon in a glass of vodka.

The secret to good bread in Canada is to buy it from a proper bakery and not from a grocery store chain. That's been my experience.

Loblaws sells passable bread under the "Ace" brand. In my view the biggest change in Canadian society, the greatest shift in quality of life for most Canadians, since I've been here was been the arrival of Ace baguettes in Loblaws.

Haven't heard of Ace, but I'll see if they have them here at Superstore (west coast equivalent of Loblaw's I believe).

We do have Terra Breads which is sold at some grocery stores around town. It's slightly more expensive, but worth it: http://www.terrabreads.com

Apart from setting the bar for grossness in a food thread, that sounds more like a too literal bloody mary.

Prior to the arrival of the breadmaker I was buying their organic sandwich loaf which was pretty good. I think it was nearly $6 a loaf though. The baguettes, whilst excellent, aren't great to keep for a few days.

This is my local bakery which is very good but you need to go and get it fresh everyday (except when it is closed on Monday and Tuesday - well it is French!)

Chinese take-aways in the UK saturate their food in MSG as this is supposed to appeal to the British palate.

I don't think its just with the British palate that MSG makes food taste good. And there are lots of Chinese takeaways at home that don't add it either.

Indeed. There's a great Chinese takeaway in Coleford called Lucky Chinese that had all the noodles dry not greasy with MSG. I prefer it dry personally, but I'm one for more natural foods anyway.

I've not had much chinese takeaway here, though a cafe in richmond I go to from time to time seems to moderate the MSG at the very least.

tosh. They do here too. It's in many more foodstuffs here than it is at home. I know because I have to avoid eating it.

It's traditional in asian food and is called aji no moto.
