The Italian ones aren't bad, but the best ones for me come from our local meat (and everything else) store.

Regardless, they get a good boil/simmer to get rid of a lot of fat before browning.

The one in the red tub is crumbly. Why it's in a tub I don't know.

In my local supermarket I can buy Stilton, Wensleydale, Leicester, Gloucester, English Cheddar, Somerset Brie and others. Are you suggesting these English cheeses have the texture of plasticine?

There is also a small chain called Alex Farms who have a unit in St.Lawrence Market where there a number of cheese vendors.
Thanks for that link, I just did a virtual tour of the shop, it looks like quite a place!

I had St. Lawrence market in mind too. I love it there! It is a bit expensive (I suppose it's a tourist trap) but everything there looks like great quality.

I haven't seen that brand before. Or maybe I did but just assumed it was a spreadable yuk. Is it expensive?

The PC Italian are what I buy, and that Imperial cheese has been around forever.. It's Kraft trying to pretend it's another company to avoid the boycott. Somewhere on the tub is the word Kraft in very tiny letters. I used to buy it but it's just too salty.

It's about $6.50 for the 250g I think. Unfortunately it's orange but get past that and it's good. Perhaps even a little overpowering when you have too much. As I did after discovering it. My local shop was selling it for about $3, approaching it's best before date and I bought 6 tubs.

I find the Balderson cheese salty. Grittily so.

I believe you're in the GTA. I was in a new supermarket today which was really quite the place. It was Longo's on Laird Drive. It has a extremely good cheese selection, the best I've seen in a Canadian supermarket.

Thanks AY. Yes, we're in Burlington. We have a Longo's nearby but maybe the one you visited was a much larger one. The cheese selection there is good though. Actually, a lovely lady told me to try Baldeson chedder (black label, I think it was four years aged) and it was scrummy. A great mature, strong taste with an almost crystalised crumble. YU-MMY. I think I may have found 'the' cheese.

Sorry to report that the tub of Imperial was purchased and it was disappointing. Very salty and a bit too much like a 'spread' for my liking. Thanks for the suggestion though. It's just a process of elimation and everyone has different tastes after all.

Have you been to Starsky's yet DottyP? I was impressed by the amount of different cheese's they have - over 600. They have quite an amazing variety of deli items, they even sell Caviar by the gramme! An in-store bakery and the largest selection of sausages in Canada... you might find something you like there.

Edit: Longos deliver - you can order online from them, handy if the you can't get to the store. www.grocerygateway.com

Ooooo, that looks like a great store! Not been there but OH works in Miss so he'll know where it is. I must sound like a right fuss-pot but good food is REALLY important to us. We miss being able to load up a trolly at Sainsbury's with goodies galore and come out having spent not too much, but I'm not in the UK and just have to get used to shopping a la Canada. Having all these great suggestions from you very helpful BE chaps/chapesses is great. I thank you!

That may have been the overpowering aspect I mentioned. I was actually eating it grilled on crusty breads. That it crumbled so much I found irritating for that purpose.

The improvement in cracker barrel and PC extra olds mostly satisfies me.

I'd rather be able to buy things like

although I don't recall it being sliced
