Does one have to be German to like pumpernickel? What about those who are German and hate pumpernickel? (like me)

You might have been had they decided not to push forward and fight the Russians

Oh no, of course not, but some on this forum think I'm German (not sure why?!?!), so just wanted to ensure that my fondness of pumpernickel wouldn't make them think that even more.

I quite liked the bread from Cobs. The white loaf made good toast and their buns were quite nice too. Having said that, I left the UK many years ago, so maybe my tastebuds had just become accustomed to the bread in Canada.

Now that I am back in the UK, can anyone recommend good bread at this end? It is probably the last thing I need as UK food is not being very kind to my waistline.

Warburtons or freshly baked bread from the Asda bakery.

Smoothered in real butter and some Chips from the chip shop on....

Thank you, I'll put those on my list. Unfortunately, I have voluntarily sworn off chips. I was quite proud of myself last night when the fish and chip van arrived in the village and I didn't have chips.

Warburtons for sliced. Waitrose for par-baked supermarket baguette, cibatta, cobs, etc (much better than the other supers. in my experience).

The you can join the ethnic oddities group. I hate tea, can't abide the smell of the stuff. You'd think it was treason the way some folks go on. Canadians folk that is.

Anyway you Germans are a disparate lot. Bratwurst in Ontario is not bratwurst as we know it - from Aldi and my German MIL.

At the risk of going off topic, Bats... How does Bratwurst differ from normal English sausages? I've seen it in Lidl and it looks more white, but it seems to be so well known (and liked)...is it any different from a Cumberland?

Yep, smoother texture, more peppery. Very nice.
Lidl have small one and Aldi big ones.
