Well
Ryanair fly to Lamezia from Stansted and also from lamezia to several other Italian airports. Easyjet fly from lamezia to other Italian airports also so the political will should be there. Especially as it would bring in so much investment to the area. We intend to send to airlines, airport authorities and gov office. Thanks for your input, its invaluable to receive positive assistance. We could do with support from all the Calabrese expats in the UK also. Tyke |

So, tell me, where do you live? What town? We are returning in July to buy a home. We will then sell ours and move within the year. I am a teacher and will teach this year and next year. We went down the west coast and up the east. Tough choice which side, but we chose the west. Somehow, I just would like to be closer to Rome. We would like the northern part of Calabria. Isn't the food fantastic? And the people, wow. I am Italian, Sicilian, on both sides. Maternal and paternal grandparents are born in Sicily, so I spoke Italian before I ever knew English and they lived with us, upstairs in the second floor apartment. It feels wonderful to go there and be part of the culture again and I can't wait! Tell me more, please? Would love to hear. Right now I am concerned about shipping costs and finding out what is allowed. I think we will bring no furniture, just clothes and household items, power tools... Thanks. MaryAnn |

Hello, there!! I have not been part of the forum all that long, either, but have totally enjoyed it. We are from America, NY State, and absolutely have fallen in love with Calabria. I have so much to ask you. My name is MaryAnn and we have been to Italy in 2003, 05, 07, and in July 08 saw Calabria for the first time. Thought it would be Abruzzo to live in permanently, but after Calabria, wow.

MaryAnn Sorry to hear you have chosen the west, we live on the beautiful east coast in one of the many hill top villages, in the Soverato area. I don't want to name the village, too many tourists may spoil it. Are you buying an old property or having one built. Good luck with your venture, removals etc. |
Re: Properties in Calabria
How it is possible to say this? What does it mean "dont give them the money"?!!! In the world people give you a home without paying?
Do name and surname, dont let think that all calabrian people are thieves! There are serious people who are working in a right way. This is what I can say for Isca Marina, they regularly finish house!!! I cant' believe it. Paolo

Sorry for butting in but i just wanted to give you some advice. Do not take it for granted that the constructor will finish what he has said he would. DO NOT GIVE THEM ALL THE MONEY until they have finished. Unfortunately they regularly dont finish houses and not paying up the full amount is your ONLY hope of pushing them into comleting the work. We have lived in our flat for more than 5 years and the outside gardens and access have never been finished. The trouble is that all the other residents of the condominium payed up and so he just never bothered to come back. Believe me, it happens a lot.

Paolo I cannot recall if Isca Marina is on the west or east coast. I think the east. It is beautiful, also, on the east coast. Thank you. MaryAnn |

Paolo, I was wondering if you know of a bank that is in Italy and also is in America, preferably NY state, my state. We would like to open an account here in America in a bank that is also in Italy. We thought it would help with the standards of money transfer and buying a home.

Re: Properties in Calabria
The Ionian coast is the East and we have just bought there. In Gerace.
Its true that some builders will leave you sitting there wondering if he is ever coming back so yes don't pay him all the money up front. We bought from a company in Gerace itself and had the completion date by contract signed by ourselves and the company. Everything finished on time. They recommended a good solicitor, architect, builder and so on. They also sent weekly fotos back to us so we could keep up on everything that was going on when we were at home. I would give these guys the:thumbsup: |

Hi folks,
I have just returned from Calabria and a wonderful 5 days inspection visit. I stayed on the East coast in a place close to Rochella Ionica. I have put a reservation down on a property which will be built come the end of 2009. The area is stunning and with the beautiful beaches on one side and the mountains on the other you cannot fail to be impressed. The locals all seem very friendly and are more than helpful to tourists. I understand there have been a lot of restrictions placed on the developers regarding positioning and height of new builds. I cannot wait to go back. But am at present looking for a Lawyer who is based or has offices in Calabria. Regards Ali Thanks. MaryAnn |

Hi, Randomguy, We visited the east coast and it is also lovely. We went up the east coast to Ciro Marina in July and then back to the west. Near what town is your town? Is it near Caulonia? We were there for the day and stayed in Guardavalle and then in Ciro Marina. Are you planning to live there all year round? We plan on buying in July on the west coast if all goes well. Tell me, one thing I encountered with the developments is that most people buy for just coming for a vacation and return through the year. I had a hard time finding developments where people permanently lived there. How was it for you? Can you tell me,or anyone, please, IF THE PRICES HAVE SHOT UP IN ITALY FOR THINGS? I mean utilities, food, transportation, gas? Wondering how the prices are with this world financial crisis. What did you find when you were there, Randomguy from Wales? Thanks. MaryAnn |
Re: Properties in Calabria
Yes the east coast is lovely.
Am not planing to live there all year round just yet will use it as a holiday home for a few years before doing so. As for developments where people could live all year round, some where better for this than others development/area etc. The place I originally bought would have been better than the one I ended up with as am now on a much larger development thaan we waant5ed to be on but thats a long story! Have not been to calabria this year unfortunately so can't tell you if prices have done up at all. |
