My first reaction is to say YES - but I'll qualify that:
You can't come scheduled and return charter, in particular because they won't sell you a ticket. There are regulations about this but the last time I checked it seemed to me they only controlled what charter companies can do, not passengers.
Common sense says why would you not be able to, for example if you don't make your charter flight how are you going to get home?
An exception is for charters/ package tours (e.g. from Russia) with bulk visas/ TPL's where you are only allowed to stay in India for the duration of the 'tour'... ditto passengers on cruise ships.
So I'll stick with YES. If I find anything to the contrary I'll post another reply.

P.S. In the past I have come charter and returned scheduled, although at that time you could also buy unused return charter seats, as you can in many countries. It is a courtesy to inform the tour rep.

It would be brilliant to be ABLE to stay the season, travelling on charter, no changing at Mumbai etc.

I prefer schedule even with the change in Mumbai, more seat space, more legroom and better food. I did travel charter before I retired when I was only coming out for three weeks twice a year, premier class when possible (those seats always got booked up very quickly), but premier class used to cost a couple of hundred more than I have ever paid for scheduled flights.

This time noticed the new flyover being constructed between the airports. Apparently will be ready in 3 years time. Not sure the cost is justified though considering state of many other roads.

You are right of course, having experienced business class with BA but it is expensive, I could afford it if I didn't pay for the family to come out every year for a holiday but I prefer to have them visit. I am saving my Jet Airways airmiles to get an upgrade next time I travel on my own.

I have never experienced road chaos and grid lock like last night around Arpora towards Calingut. And in the middle of what, i think, was the worst traffic jam i have ever experienced outside of Christmas, a bloody elephant was plodding along towards the night markets totally oblivious of the madness around it.I was fully expecting some scooter rider to crash into it and then mayhem...!
