Lesser beach beds, tables outside shacks take fun out of Goa's tourism
31 Dec: Times of India. The Goa tourism scene is just not what it was a year ago. With the state government getting strict on shutting down loud music by 10pm, putting a curb on the number of beach beds and reducing the number of tables that shacks can place outside their premises, tourism stakeholders have complained of losses suffered in business this year Delhi-like incident won't happen in Goa: Manohar Parrikar 30 Dec: Zee News. Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Sunday said an incident such as the recent gang-rape in Delhi would not happen in his state, because police there had been asked to show zero tolerance to offences against women. "Even if a single molestation case is filed and policeman doesn't take action, he has to go home," said Parrikar www.goanvoice.org.uk |
Re: In To-day's Newspapers
As we are rapidly approaching a New Year I just wanted to express my feelings about the terrible rape and murder in Delhi. It is a very sad note on which to end this year. From the TV coverage and newspaper articles I have seen it is quite clear this is an endemic and entrenched problem in India, and the response to it is institionalised gender bias.
The hope for the coming year is that so many women are now speaking out against it and are speaking about the harassment and fear they feel on a daily basis. Many women are asserting a demand for change in India. I support them whole heartedly in their struggle. The women reporters on NDTV have been very good. While a politician is saying girls should not wear skirts to school to avoid harassment, girls are demonstrating against him even giving him a pretty pink skirt to wear. I don’t think the skirt will suit him or fit him. There have been demonstrations in India since week since the girl died and it looks like they will continue tomorrow. The barbarity of the attack was horrifying, they used iron bars! As I have said before women are not treated with respect in India because gender bias is so strong, abortion on the basis of gender, infanticide, demands for dowry, acid attacks and kitchen deaths are common. That does not mean all agree with it, however, as the women of India are now saying much is covered up and there is little in the way of implementation of the law. So, my wish for the New Year is a better future for the women of India and courage for them to keep the fight going. Also, I wish a happy New Year to everyone on BE I hope that the property and visa issues are finally resolved for everyone. ruskin |

If the Government carries on like this, the shack owners will only need five beds per shack.
Fewer Russians and even fewer Brits - not just because of the recession, its the garbage and the feeling people have about the way Brits have been treated re property. I feel very sorry for the locals who depend on tourism. Veri |

Smart ‘move’ by domestic tourists this New Year 2 Jan: Herald. Though thousands of tourists from all over the country visited Calangute, there was hardly anything for the residents in terms of revenue on account of New Year rush. Most of the tourists preferred to remain awake through the night while others slept on makeshift beds even on the vehicles. Majority of the tourists cooked their own food by the roadside www.goanvoice.org.uk. I do hope Bipat see this and looks at the picture, this is how the indian tourists like to live and travel. This is what Vagator and other beaches are like over the weekend. |

Last year several hundred people who couldn't get accommodation in Goa itself, slept on the beach at Karwar on New Years Eve, we walked on the beach next evening and it was totally clean!! (I don't know how!) I must say karwar is a tourist place at other times for Indian people but a different type, older and families usually. There are no bars (one or two hidden behind shops but no 'ladies') and only 2 alcohol shops. As everywhere those looking for a good time and cheap abundant alcohol create trouble for others. (Really wish I was there or South Goa now!--- Next year Noni, I mean it come and visit and see how it is outside Goa.) |

According to the papers Palolem (which I definitely count as south Goa, and used to like) was so packed with domestic tourists this year that they were parking 1 1/2 miles away in fields and walking to the beach. AndyD 8-)₹ |

AndyD 8-)₹ Those sleeping on the beach last year were probably aiming for Palolem just 40 mins. drive. We only go there for dinner at the other times of the year; when it is quite civilised compared with how you all describe the North. When staying we go further North to Varca etc. |
Re: In To-day's Newspapers
Baga Beach was a garbage dump yesterday morning at 7am.The beach was full of bottles and discarded food containers. Also the rocks on the point below the religious retreat were covered in broken glass and crisp packets and the whole place stank of urine. I was going fishing with two Goans and we left after 10 minutes as it was too much.......going to Pondicherry on the 8th to get away from it all....!
