Goa fears charters will wind up early
Copywright Herald Newspapers & all that mullarkey:
The tourism industry in Goa is unlikely to get further respite with reports pouring in that the charter season could wind up earlier than expected this year. Though unconfirmed, many tour operators in Goa have told this paper that the Russian charter market has conveyed intentions of winding up operations by April 25 instead of its original schedule of May 15. A leading tour operator in Goa closely associated with the Russian charter business, not wanting to be quoted, explained that it would lose heavily from this possible move. This agency has already pegged its losses by the expected Russian charter cuts to the tune of Rs 8 crore. Except for the Russian charters, the industry has not received any communiqués of cuts in charters from Europe and other countries. (*) The Travel and Tourism Association of Goa (TTAG) Vice President Ernest Dias said, “So far UK charters are winding up as scheduled by April end and Scandinavians by the first week of May.†Dias however said that there is already a drop in arrivals from the UK by 30 per cent, 15 per cent from Scandinavia and 10 per cent from Russia. While global recession is a key reason for the drop, Dias also attributed huge difficulties in procurement of visas to be another major cause for the drop in arrivals of tourists to the country which is impacting Goa. It was pointed out that the embassy in Sweden has increased the time frame for issue of visas from three to 25 days. While in case of the embassy in Russia, the procedure has applied the brakes on the issue of visas to single lady Russian tourists below the age of 43. The TTAG official was of the opinion that the Central government should seriously think of issuing visas on arrival if tourism has to survive. (*) Erm, not correct - they may be flying to the end of the schedule from the UK but Monarch cancelled the Friday flight from Manchester from January 9th & the First Choice/Thomson flight from Manchester now picks up in Gatwick as well, plus there haven't been any Goa flights at all from Birmingham (different from East Midlands) this season - that's what I call a reduction in charter numbers, additionally Monarch flights are reported as departing half full. . . . . . . . . Re: In To-day's Newspapers
If the government decide to issue visas on arrival this could mean that those of us that come long term may not get the visa we would like. The visa I have at the moment is one year with the 180 day clause which suits me fine so far. On arrival you may only get a short visa which definately wouldn't suit me at all.

Special Correspondent PANAJI: Under Section 16(3) of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA), 1999, one company and its five directors and 10 other individuals in Goa have been issued notices for contravention of provisions of Section 6(3) of the Act read with relevant regulations of the RBI. Goa MP Shantaram Naik was given this information in the Rajya Sabha last week by the Union Minister of State for Finance. In a written reply, the Minister informed Mr. Naik that notices had been issued for contravention of the provisions of the FEMA and regulations made there under in nine cases in Goa. I guess the 'notices' are show cause notices - but I'd be very interested to know the nationalities of the individuals concerned AND the nationalities of the FIVE directors of the ONE company concerned.
