This school has had a chequered past, to say the least, but ignoring the dictatorial sisters that run it and the dilapidated building housing it, the real interest here is their (and Ms Lee's) take on working on a tourist visa and how they seem to think a few wriggles make it legal. Ms Lee was presumably confident in her assumptions or surely she would not have approached the police? And how come she wasnt "banged up" for the serious offence? Lets hope that at least some shoddy (Goan standard) repairs take place rather than simply bribes being paid to make it all go away. By the way, rumour has it that Ms Lee has secured the part of "Chicken Little" in panto this Christmas, but the Inland Revenue need not expect any payments as she is a volunteer and her salary is a consolidated honorarium thingy so she really isnt working or earning anything, innit? On her head be it! . AndyD 8-)# |

AndyD 8-)# SHE WAS PAID!!!!! That makes it employment, not volunteering...........full bl**dy stop, so dont try to kill the subject due to the small size of her remuneration please. And I think you will find that 10k a month is peanuts for a teacher even in Z-o-S...................but its still PAYMENT! . |

. She certainly should not have been working on a T visa even without pay, used to be an X for volunteering, now it's an E or maybe Ev. You are then allowed an 'honorarium' - plus keep I think. AndyD 8-)# |

The report seems to describe 'Goa' as an entity, when the South is very different from the North. 'Forts' 'churches' stuff is obviously nonsense (has he been to London?). I would disagree with you about temples though, apart from Neasden (very palatial, cost a lot!!), I would have thought nothing to compare with the main Ponda temples in London and many have steps so no cows or shit (or at least not cow shit).
I think (and assumed) that if Swamp-nil is going to make comparisons with London that "forts" equate with "castles", and "temples" equate with cathedrals? Otherwise any comparison would be pointless as London is not a Hindu city (yet)....... At the end of the day we have another corrupt Goan politician given "tourism" and using it to fill his own pockets whilst spouting mindless cr*p. Almost makes you yearn for Miccccckey, at least he had style (and rape, murder and extortion, of course!) . |

Re: In To-day's Newspapers
Herald letters today.
< Absurd comments Martin Beney, by email I am appalled by the level of comments made by Goa’s Tourism Director in response to the National Geographic placing Goa in the 10 worst tourist destinations (Herald, 19 Nov). Firstly, with regard to the comment “On the social and cultural front, Goans are said to be friendly and hospitable people.†Has your Tourism Director had no education at all? Social in the sense used has nothing to do with “being sociableâ€! It instead refers to the impact of tourism on the social and cultural values of Goan society. Secondly, I cannot conceive how your Tourism Director can possibly consider that “historic buildings and archaeological sites are much better than the ones abroadâ€, let alone in London. Perhaps, he could use the internet himself to view some of these sites in London and other places. I suspect he will be in for a rude shock. Of course, the National Geographic survey is not referring to “being better†but, instead, to the state to which these sites are maintained and preserved for future generations. Perhaps, the decline in tourism over the last few years can be explained by having a director who plainly has very little knowledge of the world outside Goa. |

Herald letters today.
Two month away rule J F Jackson, Calangute I congratulate Svatantra Sarjano for his excellent article ‘Why this Visa problem?’ (Herald, 18 Nov). I retired to Goa 10 years ago and spend an average of Rs 3,50,000 each year, with the local population. The expats, over the years, have grown to accept bi annual trips out of the country, amidst the total lack of infrastructure, migrants and the appalling stench of rotting garbage. But to most, the 60 day rule was the final straw, they have left forever taking with them poor opinions of Goa. I travel a lot to south east Asia where expats from many countries have retired. These are made welcome and are encouraged to form associations which regularly meet with local officials and the police to discuss items of mutual benefit. Is there any chance of this happening in Goa? None! |

What sort of message does this send out to sex offenders??? :frown: Un-bloody-believable isnt it? Never mind the message this sends to sex-offenders, what about decent people and those with children? India, and especially Goa, is clearly a haven for all types of criminal, as also typified by the ongoing mass-murder case. I'm sure you will recall, Manahan confessed to all these murders and is now progressively being found not guilty, also due to the laughably inefficient Indian police farce. . |
