Hippie who discovered Anjuna beach dies in Goa
Published: Tuesday, Oct 26, 2010, 20:11 IST
Place: Panaji | Agency: PTI

Yertward Mazamanian alias Eddie, a hippie who discovered Anjuna beach in Goa for the rest of the world, died in the coastal state last week, his friends revealed.

The 85-year-old Eddie, known as Eight Finger Eddie, was an American expat of Armenian ancestry, who discovered Anjuna beach for rest of the world in 1965 and stayed here till he breathed last on October 18.

Tony Almeida, whose father Joe was the first person to meet Edie at Anjuna, said that he had actually come to Colva beach in South Goa.

"He moved northwards after hearing from the locals about this stretch of shore,” Almeida said.

He is also called as the father of the hippie tribe in Goa.

In the 1960s, few beatniks and hippies travelled from Western Europe towards South Asia. Eddie was the first amongst them.

"Eddie and his companion came to Anjuna after walking through dense forest in 1965. It was a place at the foothill overlooking Arabian Sea," Tony said today.

Eddie was also the mind behind Anjuna's flea market in 1975 which initially began as a place to barter goods.

The flea market still exists at Anjuna although it has been turned into a cluster of shops.

Eddie continued hogging the limelight even after his death.

The page devoted to this first hippie on Facebook has been receiving comments from all across the globe.

His fans also had live streaming of his funeral on website Blogtv.com on October 18.

I dont think it does any good glorifying this incident with this sort of heading!

They are just a pair of thugs, surrounded by thugs..........and one is the Revenue Minister who clearly states that his actions were justified because the other thug strayed onto his "turf".

Disgusting.

Flights diverted, repairs on at Goa airport runway

27 Oct. IANS. Three flights, including a chartered plane, were diverted from the Goa airport on Wednesday due to an oil spill on the runway ... The three flights were a Qatar Airways flight from Doha diverted to Bangalore; a Jet Airways flight from Mumbai sent back to Mumbai; and an Amsterdam to Goa chartered flight carrying 324 passengers that was diverted to Colombo, Sri Lanka...

Goa: the "Fly in the Indian Ointment"

27 Oct: Russia & India Report. In 2009, the flow of Russian tourists to Goa reached 80,000 people, of which 1,400 people overstayed their visas ... Visas are now issued for 55 days only, though it used to be very easy to get a visa for six months ... Some people come to Goa for two weeks and remain in India for ten years or even more... Foreigners, including from Russia, quickly establish their rules in India and solve all their problems with cash ... there is a huge Russian community in Pune, but no one so much as touches it ... Hopefully, the Indian authorities will take a more balanced and reasonable approach to this problem by eradicating the criminal situation in India’s least Indian state, Goa, while also allowing ordinary Russian citizens to travel to the real India without additional visa problems

Foreigners Feel Like Pariahs

26 Oct: Herald. Page 9; Col. 1.
By Svatantra Sarjano. ... Lets first clean up our beaches, our rivers, our roads and out attitude too, then we can attract the ‘high spending tourists’ ... Alas I’m still a ‘foreigner’ even if I’ve spent 33 years of my life in India ... ... if a foreigner like me goes to buy something, the cost is almost double ... it makes us foreigners feel like pariahs that have to be exploited wherever they go, whatever they buy

I am waiting for air freight and I was told several days before the 'oil spill' that there was severely restricted capacity into Dabolim.
afaik all runways these days are made of reinforced concrete - since when did paraffin (which is basically what planes use) spoil concrete?
Enquiring minds want to know.....

If you look at Google maps and switch to satellite view, you will clearly see that the main runway is tarmac topped............
