You are quite right that broadcast media (and written media) is aimed at particular demographics. If you listen to a station that is not aimed at your demographic you will think it is crap. It probably isn't. It is lazy intellectual snobbery to dismiss anything that isn't aimed at you as crap.

It is one of the reasons the BBC have so many radio channels. Radio 4 is aimed at my demographic: middle aged and middle class. I can listen to it and know my intellect will be flattered and I won't have to suffer inane tweeny pop music. I can avoid Radio 1 safe in the knowledge I won't miss anything I value.

My response to anyone who who dismisses pop music is to ask them to write a pop song. It is very, very difficult. I may not want to listen to the output of a great pop music writer but I appreciate the craft involved.

But you probably won't here them on any Canadian stations other than college radio or late at night on the Edge.

I disagree, although perhaps the radio is different in Vancouver than it is in Oakville. Those bands would be considered mainstream here, and have been played countlessly on the local rock radio stations for years (i.e.: http://www.thepeak.fm/pages/top-thirty)

Anyhoo.. best stations are on the net. No talking, adverts or news.

NME Radio online is pretty bloody good aswell.

Did someone mention good music and Alanis Morissette in the same sentence? Blimey you've been there too long

The things I like about living in Canada mainly apply to costal British Columbia.

I like that you can get proper sausages and bacon at the Canadian Superstore.
There's loads of British bands that come over to Vancouver
I like the weather in Vancouver as it's similar to southern England
The airport is very close to me, and they have direct flights back to the UK
As mentioned before, you can get UK radio stations on the internet and also can get BBC Canada.
Heinz canned spaghetti.
Also, just found a pub that has darts and you can get proper lager like Harp and Carlsberg, not that sickly honey brown crap you get everywhere else.
The lack of humidity in the summer.
Seeing bald eagles.
Great salmon and halibut fishing
It's near the seaside.

Extract from JonboyE's list:

138 - You don't get crap larger like Harp and Carlsberg in the pubs.

Damn.

I'm irritated by the very high chance that if a new "show" is something I enjoy (usually because it's a bit different to the usual stuff) it gets cancelled without notice, so what's the point in giving it a go only to be let down just as you get into it.

That rarely happened with the licence fee.

5Live is probably the thing I miss most about the UK. Not so much for sport but the stuff through the night and every morning.

Alex...you could try News 91.9. During the day the stuff is quite like 5Live in terms of phone-ins and the like. At night it joins ESPN radio - not much point in that unless you're into North American sports. Occasionally (and inexplicably) night time will have a rerun of the daytime shows; even from a couple of days earlier. They do this at weekends too. Ignore Sunday mornings though.

It's not as good as 5Live but it's not bad.

CBC has some excellent series. Da Vinci's Inquest/City Hall, Intelligence, The Border were all BBC standard.

There is a time and a place for poncy designer lagers such as star etc. But sometimes (even mostly) a cooking lager like harp or carling is perfectly acceptable.

I hope you don't mind, but I might send this sentence to the folks back home. They could all do with a laugh at the minute and this will have them rolling on the floor.

My local when I lived in Stratford (E15) had Star on tap. I was pretty chuffed when they started selling it at the LCBO.

We have a good local pub that's owned by a Brit. Great atmosphere, but still lacking a really good lager.

It may not be the quality of a Stella or Hoffmeister but its a lot better than the sickly puke that masquerades as beer here.

As an ale snoot, I find that expression to be an oxymoron. Seriously though, the best lagers are those that are local and for local people only.

Today on that bastion of socialism, Radio 1 they had a phone in about the best beers in Ontario. Didn't hear any mention of dbd's fave, Fuller's (it has travelled too far for my liking)
