So personally I can't understand why somebody would risk being separated from their partner/new wife, when it would be very simple to secure their future so that they can come and go as they please, rather than at CIC's whim. Plus of course, if he did apply for PR then he could work as he wishes, so that's another thing it would sort.
Personally, I can`t understand why he`d want to sail across the ocean in a storm but he does, same as he doesn`t want to fill in the forms, thats why because he doesn`t want to, thats his choice, you don`t have to understand it, he didn`t ask you to, failing that call the church police.

He was just telling the OP that he found Newfoundland people very friendly, I don`t know why his status seems to be a such a big issue for some people. He`s not complaining or sponging and didn`t ask for anybodys opinion, frank or otherwise.

Yes he did say, not whinge, then went on to say about his circumstances which are unusual. What is so difficult to understand, his lifestyle is different to what is considered `normal`?
I think there are a lot of people crewing boats of one sort or another around the world. When I lived in Tenerife a guy sailed his very small yacht down from the west coast of Scotland on his own, very ballsy I thought. He was potless when he got there but that was his lifestyle, he`d got his skippers licence and was getting by just taking people out for the day and peoples generosity. I bought a meal and some drinks one day because I wanted to, good luck to him. He sailed that boat down on his own, tied it off at night, took him a few weeks I think, I wouldn`t fancy it but each to their own.
He got a job as skipper on some super yacht with these 4 Brits. First off they were going over to Rio for the carnival then back to Italy for the World Cup, he sold his boat and was well away.
Its called an alternative lifestyle.

What's so difficult to understand about the fact that we all understand that?
Now you're having a go at those that you think had a go at him.......do you not see the irony?!
Not sure what you're wittering on about churches or vicars for, but of course he can do what he wants - as I said, different strokes for different folks. Nobody here has to understand it though, but we'll be here to help him out when he's kicked out of Canada and separated from his wife.

An alternative lifestyle or a better one?
I blame my father for it all!
Every day of his working life, he left the house at 6.45 am to get on a crowded train for the daily commute to a office in London. He dreamt of travelling when he retired, talked about all the countries he would visit and died 3 months before his 65th birthday.
I have lived in Spain, France, Portugal and Greece and sailed to many countries, crossed the Atlantic in small boats over 30 times and skippered boats in some of the greatest yacht races in the world.
My lifestyle is different from yours. You might hate mine, you might not understand mine. But wouldn't the world be terrible if we were all the same?
I am living my dream.
Are you living yours?
Yes, it is possible that Canada may kick me out before I am ready to leave, but it wouldn't be the end of my dream, just the start of another adventure!

Not sure anyone objected to the lifestyle, but this is a forum for Brits to seek advice about matters relating to living abroad which begin with what's needed to have the right to work and/or reside in a particular country, in this part it's Canada.
As Sally Redux observed, he said life would be better if he got a work permit and suggestions as to how that might be achieved followed.
It developed a bit into what could be done so that he could come and go as he pleased, which would seem to be people suggesting ways for him to continue his chosen lifestyle, thus making it better.
He perhaps didn't expect it but that's why people come onto the forum isn't it?

I am living my dream.

I have sailed in the Pacific ocean but haven't crossed it....yet!
I also want to do a complete circumnavigation of America. From Newfoundland through the North West Passage and down the west coast, round Cape Horn and back to Newfoundland.
Maybe next year! But my partner is not keen on the North West passage part! She wants to sail somewhere warmer!
