I know there is a post on this somewhere but I couldnt find it AGAIN
I have freinds that have moved there just 6 wks ago and they are moving back again as they said it really wasnt what they thought it was.
High insurance, lack of facilities in the electronic front. lack of DIY materials. Costly TV/Cable...etc this list is endless....
Just wanted to get feedback on anyone that went there and thought WTH was I thinking, or have gone there and thought that but got very used to it and started to like it.
Any shocks along the way or anything that you would find that Canada is behind.
Hey any stumble stories would be great to read...
Thanks

Moving back after 6 weeks is just plain stupid. How on earth can someone evaluate their new surroundings in that time. Sounds like they did no research?
After 5 years we are contemplating moving back, mainly due to lack of work opportunities
For us quality of life really is no better in Canada.

Good grief, they've not even given it a chance. Can't believe they're moving back so soon. And did they not research anything at all? All the things you mentioned are well known about Canada - obviously they are not members of this forum or they'd have been aware of those things before they went!!
Anyway, if you can convince them to stick it out for at least 6 months (ideally a year) then that would be great - sounds to me as if they're experiencing classic culture shock. There are some good articles on the net about it, and if they can read them it might prevent them from making such a rash and costly decision after just 6 weeks.
Anyway, not got any 'WTH type stories' (apart from every time I visit I think 'why are we doing this' and feel slightly sick, but not there yet so doesn't really help you!), but just thought I'd recommend your friends read up about culture shock etc.

6 weeks? Daft.
Lack of DIY materials? Eh???
Costly Cable/TV - Don't watch it then if you can't afford it
These kind of stories are all very subjective though.

wow 6 weeks and already giving up, We live in a small community and manage with electronic stuff, DIY stuff etc. Yes some stuff is expensive but then other stuff isn't. It really sounds as if they a) haven't done to much research and b) homesick. Talking to my family and friends re the job front in the UK do they think they will find work once they get back?

Surely when people emigrate and decide it's not for them within 2 months of arrival, quoting things as per above as reasons why, there must be an underlying reason for the turnaround of thought.
Or maybe they're the kind of Brits who travel for 2 weeks a year to a Spanglish resort in the Canary Islands with a suitcase full of English grub, and the ensuing excitement at the prospect of pints in the Red Lion followed by karaoke and lashings of "After Sun" before bed. This would then be followed by an early morning wake up to proclaim the sunbeds by decree of a football club emblazoned beach towel.
Or maybe i'm just generalising

I am struggling with this one! I can't imagine having waited the amount of time we have (nearly 4 years by the time we move lock stock and barrel) to only give somewhere 6 weeks, it's pathetic. It's up there with Hubbys cousin who flew out to Germany to nanny and was back within 24 hours 'cause 'no one spoke English'.....well hello you went to Germany!
I don't know these people but I can only put this down to being homesick put probably most importantly underprepaired. Very silly imho.

As everyone here has said, 6 weeks is no time at all to come to any kind of decision. 6 Weeks is just a long holiday.
I could agree with someone who stated lack of work opportunities even though this can be worked around but not the items you have discussed.
It just plain rediculous.
Oh Dear !

I see the usual examples of lack of sympathy and understanding.
Maybe they are right and know that after 6 weeks the place isn't for them. Why wait 5 years?
And if it is culture shock then how about some sympathy instead of heckling?
Oh yes, and answering the OPs question instead of berating some unhappy people would be helpful.
My answer is that after 3 years here it's ok. Yes I did research, had read this forum, blah blah. Nothing prepares you for actually living here.
