To retire I'd have to say Switzerland or Italy for me. The isle of Capri & the Amalfi coast, or maybe Tuscany....

Before I put on my slippers, I've got some more adventuring to do and wouldn't mind spending some time in Northern India, Nepal, Bhutan, Tibet - exploring the Himalayas & foothills. Also on the list is travelling the length of South America on a motorbike, and spending a year or so sailing around the Pacific Isles....

That's interesting. A couple of you have mentioned Germany - do you think the language could be a barrier?

Maybe you speak German? Actually a lot of German's speak English....

And why Germany I wonder?

Switzerland for a bit because I absolutely love the mountain scenery there.
France for it's diversity and because I have always had an affinity with the place.

Capri has always appealed to me, as has Greece.

Definately don't want to live in Australia any longer than 5 years (2 is enough ).

Europe bound for me!

Not sure what you mean by counter productive? As a nation i find France so diverse with mountains, great beaches, pleasant landscape, great regional diversity with regards to food, dialect etc.
Also a somewhat enhanced awareness of beauty and sensuality and on the other side quick to stand up and defend what is considered worth defending perhaps a throw back from the revolution? And how quirky can Paris at night be?Must admit for a bit of an edge(?) still love London.
Besides Portugal a country i have had a very long attatchment for(but the North)I too would place Germany high up as have some others on this site.
Just not sure which part as have always liked Hamburg(apart from weather)but all recent time has been in the South..(Tubingen,Stuttgart)
Outside of Europe CapeTown,South Africa,Malaysia, are two that stand out ,and a little lower down Laos and one place never been to but have looked at living in is Panama.

If we had to work still then Cape Town in South Africa if it was to retire then probably the South of France in Languedoc.

Germany for us because it seems to be fairly central in Europe so would be easy to get to other countries. Two of my sisters lived for a time in Germany and both loved it. Besides, my husband works for a company which is headquartered in Germany, so he would have work there.

We don't speak German, but from what my sister tells me it's not to difficult to pick up and most Germans speak English.
