Re: The Thyroid Thread
I will be very careful. The thing is my doctor thinks that because you are within the range, regardless if this is the lower end, you are fine.
My point is that during this time I put on 3 stone from stopping smoking and the levels were getting towards the borderline and felt really sluggish, but he never said to increase the dosage if you get what I mean.
You sound like you've been through the mill - pardon the pun hope you are feeling better too.
Will keep you updated

Re: Underactive thyroid club (oh and high cholesterol too just for good measure!)
Ah, a numbers doctor.
When he gave you the thyroxine did you start off on 25 mcg and move up to 50 over a few weeks, Leigh?
I don't know anyone with a dodgy thyroid who does well on 50. You're taking too little of the stuff to remove your symptoms. Top thyroid doctors go on how well you feel, not what your numbers say?
Do you have any of your test results? What test did he give you where he says your numbers are ok?
Many UK thyroid sufferers end up moving their own dose up by purchasing a pill cutter and incrementally doing it ... Cut a 50 in half and you have a 25...
Of course I wouldn't advise you to do that... It should be a doctor moving your dose up....
But that's only because they can't get hold of a good doctor. Sounds like you need to find a better doc.

His answer ....... "Do you snore? If you do you are not going into a deep enough sleep during the night, therefore making you feel tired during the day"
My husband said I do snore a little but also says I go into such a deep sleep an earthquake wouldn't wake me.
I told the doc, AGAIN, that I have seen no improvements since being on thyroxine. He said it is probably because my symptoms wouldn't have been that bad before, he caught it in time before it got too bad. How does he know how bad I felt :curse:
Doing some research I have loads of symptoms that I always put down to other things before. I also can hardly move when I get out of bed first thing. I have back pain but then have previously (14 years ago) had a disc removed so I've always put it down to that.
I didn't start at 25mcg, I've always been on 50 & left at that.
He's now also discovered from blood tests that I have Haemochromatosis - too much iron. Do you know if there is any connection?

You're spot on. He is a numbers doctor. I've spoken to him again this week. Told him how exhausted I feel. I fight to stay awake between 2 and 3pm. I've set the alarm on my phone in case I fall asleep & miss the school run!

I've never been on 50mcg! I started on 100 and now am on 200
For the sleep thing, the not going into a deep sleep can also be a symptom of a thyroid problem - tell him that! Or better still, find another doctor.
Can I have some of your iron? I have none

I thought I had found a good one being as he was treating me at all. 3 years ago in the UK I was told I was 'borderline' & wasn't given anythng
Does anyone have recommendations for a good doc in Perth, NOR?

Sorry Leigh, didn't notice your post until this morning. Yes, from what I have read I believe there is a connection from Haemochromatosis. I believe that it induces the hypothyroidism... not the other way around, but you'd have to google to do some more reading.
If you type in 'Haemochromatosis link thyroid' then you should get a few things up which will make interesting reading. I had a glance and there's quite a bit.
The back pain thing I can totally understand. My back was so painful every morning. I couldn't understand why. I suffered with it for years and then when I started on the T4, it was the first thing to go. I can't tell you what a joy it was to get out of bed that day with no pain for the first time in years.
I don't know anyone who's done well on 50mcg.

Re: The Thyroid Thread
Me and Nic would appreciate your views on this one.
Nic had her first blood test yesterday after being on 100 MCG of Thyroxine for 3 weeks. She see the doc today and he said it seems to be working, but has reduced her to 75 MCG for the next 8 weeks.
She's a bit as to why, and I know you're gonna say why didn't she ask the doc, but it was the last appointment of the day and the surgery was running behind and had to close, so it was a bit of a rush rush apt.
Nic says she isn't feeling any boost of energy yet so wants to stay on the 100 MCG but I reckon if the doc say 75 then she should stick with it!
I'm guessing he's trying to find the right dosage and gonna see how the next 8 weeks go on the lower dose, but hey, I'm hardly qualified!
You lot know more on all of this so would be interested in what you reckon?
Cheers ...

It can actually take 6-8 weeks for the thyroxine to getting fully into your system so it may be that the doc thinks its working a little faster than he'd hope. The only way of us really being able to give any advice is if you have you blood results??

We don't have em ... ... and the strange thing is I'm sure Nic (who's yakking on the phone at the mo so can't ask her anything) said earlier the doc was almost hiding the results from her ... I can't recall how ... ... but maybe he switched the screen as she leaned over or sommit, I'll ask her IF she ever gets off the phone! ...

Re: The Thyroid Thread
I would make a point of asking for them each time she goes to the docs (shes entitled to them and can even ask for a copy if she wants one), until you get the right dosage. Keep a chart which shows the dosage, the amount of time she's been on that dosage, how she was feeling, and the blood results - those being FT3, FT4 and TSH - antibodies tests would be great too as I'm sure its previously been mentioned but for now those are the ones she needs to focus on . Unfortunately there is no quick fix with thyroid issues, but given the right dosage she'll get there in the end.
Cheers ...
