No Amazon streaming - a no go for me. Amazon is easily as good as Netflix IMO - The Man in the High Castle starts in few weeks
Roku and Fire TV out on top as usual - I still maintain that the Amazon Fire TV is the best, single small box streaming solution - especially the latest model
Overall, a Windows-based HTPC is the best overall setup - every service available on it as Microsoft don't play Apple/Amazon/Android etc games

I've actually stopped using the Chromecast pretty much as my Samsung TV is doing the trick. You can talk into the remote without Siri annoying you, and it searches across all your content, locally and on the internet (not just itunes and netflix). Those are the Apple TV big tick items.
I'm on Stan at the mo courtesy of a 6 month free sub. I have to say its pretty good. Good content, you can choose the res at no extra cost, and its getting some pretty good wraps online. One drawback its not tied into an ISP so it does eat into your allowance.

Cheaper Netflix? By how much? Did you offset the cost of the Apple TV (presumably the latest) against the other streamers? What about future proofing? Streamers and their features are coming thick and fast. The latest Apple TV is a pretty hefty price to pay when you probably want to move on in a year.
iTunes cards are sometimes on sale at 25% off (20% off offers are virtually always available) so that's how much you save on your Netflix subscription.
To be the most important reason to use the Apple TV is to be able to switch between 50 and 60Hz modes. Which other devices allow this (I know that the Chromecast and Nexus player don't)?

Wasn't thinking of the new one that came out - no reason to get one of those. The previous model can probably be found at $100 or less nowadays.

Is this because I-tunes is one and Netflix is the other.
Can't say I've ever seen it as an issue on my Samsung Tv or Chromecast for streaming.
Mind you I keep I-tunes at arms length. No need for it.

It's to do with encoding, though a lot of people don't notice the difference and are happy watching a picture that gets some serious judder during panning shots, etc. If you play something like Happy Valley you should see it straight away if you are in 60Hz mode.
Similarly, if you play Google Play content in 50Hz (for some reason the Nexus player won't budge from it) you will see a slight pause in the picture twice every second (like a duplicate frame every 1/2 sec.). But most people don't see anything wrong with the picture...
I only use iTunes for paying for my Netflix subscription. This way I don't need to mess with credit cards, in fact I don't even give Netflix any details as everything is done via Apple TV (the only way to access Netflix without paying them directly).
In Australia though I have to say that anyone who doesn't have their mobile on a postpaid basis should definitely be building up a nice Google Play library of films/shows/music. My lady and I are both on prepaid so we are making a lot of Google Play purchases each month (*hint* *hint*).

Not sure I understand why. Kodi works brilliantly is legal..... and most importantly free.
I'm a strict 100pct streamer now and my 6TB media collection is basically redundant. ..... save for 300 Gigs of music... which with increased mobile allowance and wider wireless coverage is probably about to become redundant as well.

Personally I'm not the most fanatical about new releases..... Last movie I hung out for was The second best marigold Hotel and that turned out to be a huge disappointment after the first. I should have realised.
Currently watching "The Town" TV series.... anyway that's the only series on my horizon at present.

The premier league is available free on Kodi.... It does change around a lot as the powers that be close the holes... however the geeks and fanatics are always one step ahead.

Maybe have a browse from the last page backwards. Although there is a great post in plain simple english on the first page that explains exactly what Kodi can do for you.

How is the latest Fire TV? Can you manually select the picture setting and choose between 50 and 60Hz?

In Singapore right now. Can't find cricket on the TV. I could mask an Aussie IP and log in 2 my Foxtel app, but in previous experiences to VPN's are too slow.
I can access my NAS drive on the home network from up here. My Samsung TV is on the home network and internet. I wonder if there's a way to log in that and somehow see what's on the TV or perhaps use its Foxtel app.
Any ideas?
