Devices like the Chromecast or the Nexus Player are still behind the times when it comes to getting the perfect picture.
I don't really have any need to stream anything else apart from Google Play Movies or possibly Hulu for 1-2 months per year.

It kind of depends on what you're streaming. For Netflix I cannot imagine using any other device as I have full control over 50 vs 60Hz and pay less as I can have the monthly fee come out of my iTunes balance (where I can always but their cards at 20% off or better).

The picture on Chromecast is superb. Not sure where you get that idea.
For a fifth of the price, there's no point going Apple TV. It offers nothing for the extra price unless you are happy being brainwashed

I love my 2 Rokus. Watching BBC iPlayer just about every night.
There's a new series of The Detectorists on at the moment, anyone else enjoying that?

Cheapest and simplest solution:
Get a Samsung Blu-ray player with Smarthub - about $150 for the cheapest
Get a DNS redirect service - about $40 a year. I use Smartydns
Change the DNS settings on your router or the Samsung
Set up the Samsung with UK apps - plenty of info online and really easy to do
You've now got BBC, ITV, C4, C5 etc
Easy peasy japanesy

The picture on the Chromecast is good, but shite if you are stuck with its 60Hz mode (only one it does) when streaming UK content which should be at 50Hz.
There is a point getting an Apple TV. Cheaper Netflix. And full control of the picture. In fact right now I think it's pointless looking at any other device apart from the Apple TV as the main streaming device for Netflix...

Paying? I use Netflix. Having an Apple TV means I pay less for it than anyone else.

Serious question, can you get Hulu and Amazon Prime on Apple TV?

Roku and Fire TV out on top as usual - I still maintain that the Amazon Fire TV is the best, single small box streaming solution - especially the latest model
Overall, a Windows-based HTPC is the best overall setup - every service available on it as Microsoft don't play Apple/Amazon/Android etc games

Recently watched Beasts of No Nation, Netflix's first feature movie, starring Idris Elba
A very good film, especially if you are interested in Africa. Oscar material IMO
If Netflix are starting to make movies of this quality then the major Hollywood Studios need to get worried

It certainly has to be better than the mindless drivel that the SyFy channel keep churning out. Such low quality pap inevitably involving sharks or bad CGI aliens.
I know that directors have to start somewhere, but SyFy is meant to be a reasonably premium channel. How they can commission Ultra Shark vs Mega Collossus over decent offerings like Blood and Chrome are absolutely beyond me.

The streaming services are leaving a lot of the old media companies in their wake
