Smokers

You'll be pleased to hear that after a while, the smell starts to repel you, rather than attract you...OK, Sarah I have just read Alan Carrs book and have completely changed my mind - I think you should buy her it.
After reading his book I can only say one thing:
I am a non-smoker and will not pick up another cigarette as long as I live.
Anyone who knows me, will not believe that
but my whole perception of smoking and stopping smoking has changed within the 3 hours it's taken me to read that book to the point where I feel physically sick at the thought of having another cigarette.

When I got the book this morning the next shop I went into was the smokemart and I bought a carton of B&H.
I haven't had a cigarette since 4:30pm, which although it isn't long normally when I try to stop I would be pulling my hair out and wandering around aimlessly trying not to think about a having ciggy.
Instead I'm sat here smiling thinking I do not want a cigerette.

- Smoking cessation timeline - the health benefits over time
- In 20 minutes, your blood pressure and pulse rate decrease, and the body temperature of your hands and feet increase.
- Carbon monoxide in cigarette smoke reduces the blood’s ability to carry oxygen. At 8 hours, the carbon monoxide level in your blood decreases to normal. With the decrease in carbon monoxide, your blood oxygen level increases to normal.
- At 24 hours, your risk of having a heart attack decreases.
- At 48 hours, nerve endings start to regrow and the ability to smell and taste is enhanced.
- Between 2 weeks and 3 months, your circulation improves, walking becomes easier and you don’t cough or wheeze as often. Phlegm production decreases. Within several months, you have significant improvement in lung function.
- In 1 to 9 months, coughs, sinus congestion, fatigue and shortness of breath decrease as you continue to see significant improvement in lung function. Cilia, tiny hair-like structures that move mucus out of the lungs, regain normal function.
- In 1 year, risk of coronary heart disease and heart attack is reduced to half that of a smoker.
- Between 5 and 15 years after quitting, your risk of having a stroke returns to that of a non-smoker.
- In 10 years, your risk of lung cancer drops. Additionally, your risk of cancer of the mouth, throat, esophagus, bladder, kidney and pancreas decrease. Even after a decade of not smoking however, your risk of lung cancer remains higher than in people who have never smoked. Your risk of ulcer also decreases.
- In 15 years, your risk of coronary heart disease and heart attack in similar to that of people who have never smoked. The risk of death returns to nearly the level of a non-smoker
You should be very, very proud of yourself for giving up smoking. You can see from the timeline above that you will have already made improvements to your health.
As an ex smoker, gave up 13 years ago, I know how hard it can get.
Keep going,

Well it's been almost 24 hours since my last cigarette. It's been quite hard this morning, and I think it's because I didn't have my 'special' ciggie - for me thats the one first thing in a morning that doesn't actually taste of anything and doesn't do anything at all for me as I need another within 10 minutes
. But I have resisted all temptation and as the day is going by it's getting easier.

I'm expecting mine any day

Wow you guys are doing great. That book is bloody good. Having the "i'm a non-smoker" attitude right from the start is a really good way to look at it.

I found chewing gum helped me when ever I fancied a fag, I'd chew instead.

I didn't even want to stop smoking until Saturday
I think it's the stubborn side of me that's getting me through it this time really (and the greedy side), I don't want to give in to temptation as I worked out if I do that cigarette will cost me approx $73,000
It's now been 63 hours since my last ciggie

I could murder one right now though

$73,000 - Oh my, that is well worth giving up for. Don't forget the compound interest if you put the price of a packet of fags into the bank everyday.
Now work out what you'll save in 6 months and what lovely things you'll buy with that money!
