You asked me about a 'You pollute you pay' motto. Not my area of expertise so I will defer to the polltion thread you are about to start.

We'll the 3 or 4 most arguably wealthy countries in the world, do indeed have the most welfare.

The Scandinavians, they also pay the highest taxes and apparently are happy to do so.

If I had to pinpoint an area of waste, it's on pensioners, they should have provided more for themselves. Thats from someone coming up till their own pensionable age.

The last people they should be restricting are the Young.

Its not like this reduction of pensioner welfare hasn't been on the cards for a very long time. Governments have told us for decades that our ageing populations will need to support themselves. Hence compulsory superannuation in Australia. Will a pension actually exist in 20 years time?

I'd go a lot further actually, I dont like the concept of inherited wealth, I do however like the idea of getting the most out of each and every young person, no matter what the cost or effort.

And beyond :)

Nothing should get left IMO.

But that will never happen.

I agree with making pensioners more self-reliant income wise but the only way to do that is to teach people from young to be the same. With that in mind, welfare for the young should be restricted to education, health, training and genuine disability support. In that vein, out of the latest tax changes, raising uni fees is a huge error. The result will be less Australian graduates which is hard to see how it'll benefit the country. Saying that, I understand that under the current system the dropout rate is high, so maybe the aim is to reduce the proportion of drop-outs?

Ouch! That's radical :D

That'll trigger a "use it or lose it" mentality among pensioners. It might even spawn a new subculture, for example old boy racers, etc

Yeah I'm not sure on the university thing either. One of the things that could make Australia really competitive in the world market is education. Not just providing world class facilities but providing the best graduates in the world. Australia will need to compete areas such as sciences, technology, and research to maintain its ability to be strong on the world market. Australia could develop and sell its brilliant ideas to the rest of the world by producing brilliant graduates.

knockoff. Is this what you refer to as corporate welfare?

Don't you think they would be clever enough to work within the laws? Google aren't a charity, the are a business. If the laws aren't able to secure any tax perhaps they should change the laws. If they change the laws google might just pack up and bugger off. Perhaps the govt needs to look at the way Ireland and Singapore have structured their tax systems to entice foreign companies establishing themselves in the country.
