The MRRT (and the original Rudd mining tax) was a socialist attempt to try and bypass the constitution of Australia and has basically failed

If the socialists are worried about super profits then they should impose extra taxes on all businesses that make super profits. The banks would be a good place to start, but that's right, it won't happen because they own the government

this was always my problem with the mining tax/MRRT - it focused on a single sector, not on all companies making 'super profits' I agree with Zulu that it should have been extended to catch all of them, and at least make some attempt at a level playing field.

I remember that Rudd said that the resources of the Australia belonged to the Australians, which is fair enough. But the banks profits are coming from the actual money that Australians have earned, through interest rates, fees, charges etc. They should have more concern about that than they have in the esoteric 'ownership' of minerals and resources.

Completely agree. Its discrimination and its lacks creativity and foresight.
