It's not an easy thing to do m8. I have now left my other half behind in england and I'm writing this from singapore airport. hit Melbourne tomorrow morning and I can't wait hopefully I'll be too busy to carry on feeling s**t gotta say it was the worst time ever having to say goodbye to the girlfriend but I knew I had to do it or forever regret not making the move.

Hey loners!

I have a question for all that are out there.

Did anyone of you take things like doctors/dentist/optician notes with you?

Or did you just literally just go with a few bits and bobs?

I don't know who I need to tell that I'm leaving? Obviously my boss, and family and friends, but anyone else? Tax man?

I don't want to cut myself off from coming back though. I won't make it a "permanent" thing until I'd been there and happy 6-12 months.

Think I'm going to book my flight for 26th December and hand in my notice next week! Hopefully visa will be here soon.

I've got my doctors notes - but not the others as dont think they are such a big deal. Tell the tax man - cos if you have worked full time up to the date you go you can claim a refund probably. Form P85 or something like that. Every little helps.

Er......banks/credit cards/council tax/life insurance....list is endless depending on how complicated your affairs are. (Hehe - ex partners perhaps - just to say...So Ner!):rofl:

Ah, I'll try and sort the tax thing then. I presume when I leave work, they'll notify them anyway?!? I don't understand the inland revenue.

I'll be keeping my credit cards for the time being, and a UK bank account open. I may well close my ISA down though. I don't know whether I need to tell my bank I'm going abroad or not. Will I pay more/less tax?! God it's confusing!!!!!

You never know, I may be the one to break the mould!! - I would love to fly 14 Feb 2008, just so that I have a memorable date (get the pun!!).

This is what visaland has reduced me to!!

Work will tell them you've left the company but not that you are no longer UK resident (which is hwo you get tax rebate) - you have to do that yourself. As for your cards etc you can keep them open and they'll send statements to your Oz address as long as you say you are only absent temporarily I think. I'm keeping my cards and bank account at my Dad's address - seems easy with internet banking etc etc.
