Re: The Official Loners Thread

Well, my 457 application is now in. Funny thing, I accepted the job back in December, then two weeks later a guy I've known for a year asks me out. So, I've now got a bf, but heading to Perth on my own for a three year contract.... Not sure what it's going to do to the relationship, but I have to leave my current job before it sends me completely mad, and jobs in my line of work are somewhat rare.

Hello, welcome to the loners thread.

I'd imagine 3 years on the other side of the world is going to do wonders for your newly formed relationship!!! :p

Thanks xzibit! I know, it's crazy really. Still, I'm used to living on my own, so I don't think it's going to be too hard for me. And he knew I was was leaving from the start, so it's not like it came as a surprise!

I suppose it should be easier to leave someone you've been with for a short period of time, over someone you've been with for years (like I have to), but it still isn't easy.

Just tell him, that if he'd have got his ass into gear earlier, then it may have been different lol. :D

It must be very hard having to leave a long term partner to follow your dreams. I can't imagine having to make that decision. I guess my reasons for going are a bit different to a lot of people here - I'm just going to my next job, I'll probably be back in the UK at the end of the contract. I always knew this would be the way I'd have to work, at least for several years after qualifying, so I never figured on a long-term relationship. (It was only after we'd been together for a few weeks that he let on he'd been trying to attract my attention for months! )

Interesting. I made a decision to not get involved with anyone whilst waiting on this bloody visa. Not condemning your decision as things happen. I just felt it was best for me as knowing my luck it would scupper my plans and keep me trapped here. No thanks.

I have also made a vow to keep my heart closed to all things affectionate until I get down under. However, this is not a difficult thing for me as have had a drought in that department for longer than it takes to walk the Nullabour.

Probably because you havent been searching. You've probably been subconsciously holding yourself back to avoid heartbreak.

I'm actually just entering into a steady relationship even though I barely have 3 months til I leave. The way I see it I'd rather have 3 months with an amazing girl and have to leave her behind then not have her at all...

PMSL!! So it's just you and the trusty rabbit then!?!

Men of a little town just outside Sydney watch out, there's going to be a sex crazed female on her way.

That's what we figured, too. A few months is better than wondering "what if...", but I said from the start I wouldn't change my plans for him and, equally, I wouldn't expect him to change his plans for me.
