You keep coming back with "dodgy install"... in what way? How come you have "seen plenty of those"? What do you do, go round checking peoples aircon as a hobby?
It works, it does its job, the local company who installed it are multi-award winners in the industry... its just not as good as central heating at keeping a house warm.

A vast number of houses don't. Why do you think one of the complaints on here every year is that many of us live in places with NO heating? There may well be a lot of houses that have this allegedly amazing ducted heating, but there are also a lot which don't, for a myriad of reasons. To say "nearly every house" just isn't true.
Ozzie - I hear that reverse cycle is deemed to be efficient - probably in the respect you mention. I can only come to the conclusion that electricity is electricity and anything that uses over 1KW/h starts to send your dial spinning.
If you left an iron on all day, you'd be in trouble.
