Hated Next... always thought it was a pile of crap. Used to love the chicken sub-rolls at M&S but not much else in there. Bought a lot from John Lewis and most of my clothes from independent retailers or online.

My wife seriously misses Boots, Wallis and the smaller independents again. Sydney and Melbourne may have similar types of shops but where we are in the Illawarra there is nothing much like that at all. Its all Payless, Bi-Lo, Go-Low and a race for the bottom.

Used to think that Woolworths and Coles were utter rubbish by comparison to the large UK supermarket chains but have now got used to them. That doesn't mean they are any better than when we first arrived, just that we have accepted the fact that the choice isn't as good.

One does not need to have experienced every shop in a country to comment on such a thing. People don't go to the whole of the UK or every state of the USA but still form a view of it. So that's an empty and unfair thing to say.

There are specialist shops for almost (I am deliberately saying ''almost'') every hobby or craft you can think of. If not in UK itself, they're in Europe and will ship to UK.

Even my Australian wife and her siblings agree that there isn't as a wide a range of shops in Australia as in UK.

What have you got against NEXT and M&S? Have you got the good old ''if it's not in Australia it isn't worth having anyway'' philosophy going on?

sorry mate but not everyone bases their quality of life on shopping.

When I go it will be M&S, Mothercare, Boots, WH Smith although they are in Australia (well Sydney at least) but not as good, and supermarkets

None. Improvise, Adapt and Overcome. I adapted to my new environment.

Reason #1 for Emigration Failure - You'll never truly accept your new life until you let go of your old one.

Sorry I must be in the wrong thread I thought this one was started as a "lighthearted one". Why is the topic of shops such a "sensitive" subject

Interesting question, perhaps the fact that people are a bit sensitive and others havent got to grips with providing meaningful relevant information.

By the way Aldi is better here. Fact!!!!!!!:)

because the OP is on a mission to run down the country that "duped" him into coming here, by means of propaganda

Because the Godzone light infantry are duty bound to defend Australia against even the slightest criticism.

He wasn't duped. He came (apparently) because his son lives here. I've heard of extended parenting - but I reckon it might be time to cut the apron strings.

errr - you do know that M&S do delivery to Australia now? Granted you'd need to make it a bit of a bulk batch to make it worthwhile and delivery may take a little longer than 3 days.... but its a start...
