Yeah, I agree, this is one of the few advantages of Australian shopping!

The lack of variety does mean you tend to cook most things from scratch which is obviously much healthier. It would be nice though on those occasional days when you have no time or are unprepared there was more choice other than the awful fast food take aways or a roast chook and salad from woolies. If you can get there before closing ;)

You can cook from scratch in the UK too.

STOP PRESS The boss has just shot me out of the water by coming home with a fresh chook. I'm off to find my sword.

Least it is a Larnaca? chicken. Not the place in Cyprus, a brand of organic chook sold here - and the boss will prepare a salad.

Said what? Cook from scratch?! I only read that last poster. My point was that less variety = does not equal inferior eating.. Sorry - I will go and whip myself. Let you know how I get on.

You must tell us all where you are, so no one else moves there ;)

We are inundated with choice in my area, I think Victoria Point (Population 13,753 in 2006) has 4 or 5 bakers, 4 butchers (varies from expensive to budget), 2 Woolworths, 1 BiLo, 1 ALDI plus loads of smaller shops. Then 10-15 minutes away we have the major shopping centres !

Us too. In our little suburb's shopping centre we have Coles, Woolies, 2 butcher shops, at least 3 or 4 bakeries and a produce shop. 5 minutes drive we have a huge wholesale butcher shop and a really nice produce market. Another 5 minutes away are the farmer's markets.

Certainly there is no shortage of choice for us here where we are, but that's not to say there isn't one elsewhere.

We have a tiny wholesale Butchers near us, well, the retail bit is tiny, and I normally keep quiet about it, but the prices are about one third of the similar quality in Woolworths, if Woolworths even did that quality!
It really pays to ask the locals, and find the best options.

Yeah. We rarely buy meat at Woolies or Coles. We really only shop at the supermarket for things we can't get at the smaller local retailers.
