Just read the whole thread and wanted to say I'm back in the UK at the moment after 4 years in Godzone and it's a fact that the shops here in the UK and the entire act of being a consumer is far better here. There is just no comparison and I just can't understand how any ex UK person can defend any aspect of shopping in Australia. They must have either very short memeories or very anti UK or too pro Aus to really have a valid opinion. (in my opinion!)
Also please dont shut this thread down just because it;s getting a bit heated!! It's the heat that makes it worth reading! this makes, for me at least, the act of being a consumer very pleasant indeed. personally I don't get a lot of satisfaction in buying bananas for 10p a kilo because Tescos have used their big stick to put some carribean farmer on the bread line. Id rather pay a fair price. |

Are boxing gloves cheaper in the UK or Australia?

Ah, but screwfix have better ones than both of them :p;) Actually, when we first got here my OH got his Mum to send over a screwfix catalogue, so that he could go into Bunnings and say I want one of these...half the time he'd ask for something and they'd have no idea what it was  |

I would have loved to have kept shopping at my local grocers, bakers and butchers but they all got put out of business by places like Tesco's who opened up stores everywhere and under cut them. My local grocer was the best guy, so was the butcher (who was also a family friend) and both of them had to close as it cost them more to stay open than they could earn. This fate is also falling on my MIL who own a gorgeous country pub in Thornton. Brewster are forcing her out of business because she can't buy the beer cheaper than Brewsters sell it. Doesn't matter that they are 3 mile away, they are on the bus route and it's cheaper for the locals to go there on the bus and spend their cash in a theme pub. I really hope this doesn't happen everywhere, but sadly it's becoming all the more common. Guess you have been lucky G to have escaped all of this, or are you one of the many that think it's great to drink pound a pint beers and buy fruit and veg from Asda for next to nothing? I hope not because this is why this is happening in a lot of places - not just the uK. I seriously hope that it doesn't happen here :( |

Bit of a generalisation that I think.
Where I lived in Derbyshire we did not even have a supermarket locally. Very little choice where I live now. In Edinburgh my nearest butcher was miles over the other side of town, although the beef was nearly as good as here, so I sometimes made the trip at a weekend if I wasn't working |

not a generalisation at all. it is well known that big supermarkets killed the wee man in the uk.
we had three bakers, two butchers and two grocers in our little Derbyshire town. the big supermarkets don't seem to have killed all of them. here we have either woolworths or Coles, one overpriced grocer, One overpriced baker and an overpriced butcher.....not a lot of choice here IME. |

It is people looking for bargain basement prices that have let the supermarket giants flourish and kill the corner shop at the same time as holding suppliers to ransom. not good for our long term future imo. incidentally the pub chains are trying to do the same and kill off the great british pub. poulation is relevant to the supermarkets too. you can rest assured that if the town you lived in was without a supermarket, it was because the profit - cost ratio wasn;t there for them, hence the reason your village was spared |
