Indeed.....and that is what has happened in many Australian suburbs....it is not a purely British phenomenon.

I would need to find some customers who like a decent pint and I don't think that is possible here.

It is the major breweries that killed the Australian pub.....many years ago.

Mothercare - there are no dedicated baby shops in any of the shopping centres I've been to - you need to go to the outer retail areas for specialist shops like that and then the choice is a bit limited.

Do you not have Baby Target where you are?? Its just like Mothercare!!

I agree and disagree. Next clothes were good quality for the money, and if you bought well the styles can be timeless.
In Oz the only comparison would be Cue, Portmans or Jaqui E for the quality, which even then can be questionable at times.

Children's clothes have come a VERY long way in the 9 years I have been here, Target and Kmart were awful for kid's clothes when we arrived. Not just the styles but the quality was appaling. But I guess I had been spoilt with M & S and NEXT.

For those who say that the supermarkets here are better than the Uk, I would say you obviously like to eat the same food week in week out. I'm not saying the actual food is better in the UK, as seafood and some meat is certainly better here but the choice of other items, fresh and otherwise are quite limited.

We had family visit from the UK last Easter and they thought that the fruit they brought in our local Woolies and greengrocers was really bland compared to the UK. This shocked me as I always thought that it was better here. Go figure!

One does not need to have experienced every shop in a country to comment on such a thing. People don't go to the whole of the UK or every state of the USA but still form a view of it. So that's an empty and unfair thing to say.

There are specialist shops for almost (I am deliberately saying ''almost'') every hobby or craft you can think of. If not in UK itself, they're in Europe and will ship to UK.

Even my Australian wife and her siblings agree that there isn't as a wide a range of shops in Australia as in UK.

What have you got against NEXT and M&S? Have you got the good old ''if it's not in Australia it isn't worth having anyway'' philosophy going on?

Not as light-hearted as advertised  :sneaky: :D

It hit me today as I was cleaning the kitchen (good husband that I am;)) that all the time we have been together we vertually never cook any prepared or frozen food. My wife cooks everything, including baby food, from scratch. It was quite an eye opener to see the baby jars and the snacks that many kids have.

You can do this in many countries, and the less variety in Australia certainly hasn't impacted us.

Yeah, I agree, this is one of the few advantages of Australian shopping!

The lack of variety does mean you tend to cook most things from scratch which is obviously much healthier. It would be nice though on those occasional days when you have no time or are unprepared there was more choice other than the awful fast food take aways or a roast chook and salad from woolies. If you can get there before closing ;)

Nothing stopping you doing baby food from scratch in UK either!! My daughter certainly does. When i was there, my little beastie girl, who is now 19mths old, ate near enough the same as the rest of us. If we had roast dinner she had mashed up roast dinner...lol. Daughter has a mini blender that mashes stuff up.
She didnt like my baked mackerel much though
